Friday, December 17th, finds the Memphis Grizzlies facing the Sacramento Kings for the second time this season. The initial November 28th game was won by the Grizzlies won 128-101.
The Grizzlies last played Wednesday in a 113-103 winning effort versus the Blazers while the Kings played Wednesday defeating the Wizards 119-105.
Memphis Grizzlies
When Ja Morant got hurt everyone worried the 9-10 Grizzlies would plummet down the standings. Instead, they’ve gone 9-1 in the 10 games he’s missed with Jaren Jackson, Desmond Bane, and Dillon Brooks proving just how deep this young Grizzlies team is.
In the comeback win versus the Blazers, Bane led the way with 23 points six rebounds, and four assists. Brooks offered 22 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Steven Adams seldom gets the praise for his bone-jarring screens and offensive rebounds quietly delivered a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds (7 OR).
Kyle Anderson (13), Tyus Jones (12), and Xavier Tillman (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Zaire Williams (ankle), and Brandon Clarke (knee) were downgraded to out Friday, while Sam Merrill (ankle) and Ja Morant (knee/COVID) remain out indefinitely.
Sacramento Kings
Each time the Kings have played the Raptors, dramatics have followed with Luke Walton getting fired after the initial meeting and a closed-door players meeting occurring following the second loss to an undermanned Toronto squad.
While they collected a win in the next match it seems clear, GM Monte McNair needs to overhaul his scouting department.
In the last decade, the Grizzlies nabbed draft lottery picks twice: Jaren Jackson (4th) and Ja Morant (2nd) and their nemesis Raptors used the fourth pick this season to nab what looks like a generational talent in Scottie Barnes.
But unlike those franchises, the Kings have whiffed repeatedly with multiple lottery picks. Consider some of their selections (and who they missed) in the last decade:
- 2012: Thomas Bryant – 5th | (Damian Lillard – 6th)
- 2013: Ben McLemore – 7th | (Giannis Antetokounmpo -15th or Rudy Gobert – 27th)
- 2014: Nik Stauskas – 8th | (Zach LaVine – 13th or Nikola Jokic – 41st)
- 2015: Willie Cauley-Stein – 6th | (Devin Booker – 13th)
- 2017: traded 10th pick for 15th and 20th to select Justin Jackson and Harry Giles | (John Collins -19th, Jarrett Allen -22nd, or OG Anunoby – 23rd).
- 2018: Marvin Bagley III – 2nd | (Luka Doncic – 5th or Trae Young = 3rd)
I won’t debate De’Aaron Fox or Tyrese Haliburton and while Davion Mitchell could prove prophetic it’s worth noting Chris Duarte (13th) could’ve provided immediate help to a team vying to make the playoffs or Alperen Sengun who was a steal at 16th.
Draft picks are never a given (look at Zion Williamson and his health) but for a franchise to repeatedly miss the mark with a decade of lottery picks is concerning and if they can’t turn things around a change is necessary.
Sacramento is one of the teams who got hit this week with positive COVID tests but the trio affected must be asymptomatic as Alex Len is downgraded to ou, while Marvin Bagley III and Terence Davis are questionable.
Richaun Holmes will miss his fifth consecutive game with an eye injury.
