On Friday, April 23rd the Memphis Grizzlies and Portland Trail Blazers will meet for the first time this season. This match is the first of three games all coming in quick succession with the next two on April 25th and 28th.
The two clubs enter on the heels of losses and both on mini losing streaks. Memphis is clinging to the eighth seed a half-game up on the Spurs and trail the sixth and seventh seeds (Mavericks and Blazers) by 2.5 games. Portland as noted sits 2.5 games up Memphis but with three games on tap over the next week, they could easily swap spots.
The Blazers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 51 wins in 91 meetings. Last season, the teams played just twice with each team winning once.
While the Grizzlies have lost two games in a row they were playing well prior with seven wins in ten games. More importantly, they are feeling confident and the return of Jaren Jackson Jr. has bolstered their confidence.
In triple J’s return to the hardwood, he entered as a reserve playing 18 minutes with a productive 15 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks. His shooting as expected was rusty (4 of 11) but he got to the line six times nailing them all.
Ja Morant led the way with 22 points, six rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Kyle Anderson (12) and Desmond Bane (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
Jonas Valanciunas is in the concussion protocol program and questionable for Friday.
Portland Trail Blazers
It’s been a rough week for the Blazers with consecutive one-point losses to the Clippers and Nuggets.
Damian Lillard returned to the hardwood but struggled from the field shooting 9 of 23 from the field and 2 of 10 from deep for 22 points. Lillard added four rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Six Blazers scored in double-figures Norman Powell collecting 17 points, while CJ McCollum (14), Robert Covington (12), Carmelo Anthony (12), and Enes Kanter (11) being the others.
Ultimately, the defense is the issue and Terry Stotts needs to figure their issues out quickly as the Blazers are in jeopardy of slipping into the play-in tournament.
Notably, Stotts is seemingly not enamored with certain players who are frequent CD DNPs on the box score (coach’s decision – did not play). Rondae Hollis Jefferson and Harry Giles are among those riding the pine. The question is either or both could provide some rebounding and defensive effort so it’s an odd choice.
Derrick Jones Jr. missed the game Wednesday suffering from a right hip contusion. Zach Collins continues his post-surgery ankle rehab.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Blazers are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Grizzlies are 5-4-1 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
The key for the Blazers versus the Grizzlies will be protecting the paint as Memphis leads the league scoring an average of 56.0 in the paint. Portland ranks 19th allowing an average of 48.3 opponent points in the paint scoring.
Lillard may still be recovering but he’ll approach this game (and the upcoming two others versus Memphis) like a playoff game.
