On Monday, January 18th, Western Conference foes will meet as the Memphis Grizzlies and Portland Trail Blazers will face off for the first time this season and is the first game in a back to back between the two teams.
Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies are one of the hottest teams in the league and enter this one on a 5 game winning streak to finally hit a positive record on the season and climb into the 8th seed in the Western Conference. Two games ago marked the return of young superstar point guard Ja Morant who had been held out for three weeks due to an ankle sprain. The Grizzlies were able to hold off the Phoenix Suns at home in a dramatic back and forth game to win 108-104, led by Morant with 17 points and 10 assists.
The Grizzlies will be without Jaren Jackson Jr., Justice Winslow, Killian Tillie, and Jontay Porter due to injuries.
Jonas Valanciunas will also miss the game due to the NBA’s health and safety protocols. These absences will leave Memphis shorthanded and place a lot of the burden onto Morant which will require Kyle Anderson, Dillon Brooks, and Brandon Clarke to step up in order to secure the win.

Portland Trail Blazers
Portland has been an up and down team so far and are sitting in the 6th spot in the Western Conference. They will begin their home back to back against the Grizzlies on Wednesday but will be without several of their key players. Jusuf Nurkic (wrist), CJ McCollum (foot), and Zach Collins (ankle) are all out with injuries which will require big games from players like Damian Lillard, Robert Covington, Carmelo Anthony, and Gary Trent Jr. in order to grab the win.
Portland has notoriously been an efficient scoring team in the past especially from beyond the arc which will be important again in this matchup. The Trail Blazers will be weak interiorly without two of their best big man which will lead to less rebounds and second chance scoring so the shooters will need to hit their shots.

Ja Morant is back from an early season ankle injury and has stepped back into the starting lineup without missing a beat to lead his team with averages of 17 points and 8 assists. Portland is a good team but are not equipped to replace the productivity of McCollum, Nurkic, and Collins simultaneously. Their first game without the trio was a lobsided loss of 125-105 to the Spurs. LiIlard will do his best to work his superior scoring ability to keep this one close but Memphis is simply too hot and been playing too well together to let one player beat them. Take the Grizzlies to pull the ML upset.
