Tuesday, November 15th, finds the Memphis Grizzlies facing the New Orleans Pelicans for the first of four scheduled contests this season. Memphis will host games on November 25th and December 31st while the Pels will host again on April 5th.
Memphis arrives having last played Sunday in a (shorthanded) 92-102 loss versus the Wizards while the Pelicans last played Saturday in a winning 119-106 effort versus the Rockets.
Last season, the squads played four times with Memphis winning three of four contests. The Pelicans hold the advantage all-time having won 40 times of the club’s 74 meetings.
Memphis Grizzlies
Don’t read too much into the Grizzlies’ loss to the Wizards. Both Ja Morant and Desmond Bane were given the night off to rest their sore ankle and toe respectively.
A week prior the Grizz beat the Wizards 103-97 and while Bradley Beal was out in both games don’t forget Jaren Jackson Jr. has yet to play this season.
There is still work for the Grizzlies to do to tweak their systems but without triple J it’s hard to fully judge the Grizz’r defense. Then again, when you have a player who can sky for a game-saving block against anyone the team is never out of the mix.
Memphis scores the eighth most in the league putting up 114.8 points per game. They are tied with the Suns and Jazz in 16th shooting 46.7% from the field and tied for seventh with the Kings shooting 37.1% from deep
Ja Morant (ankle) and Desmond Bane (toe) are listed as questionable for Tuesday, but unless the injuries are worse than initially indicated I suspect they’ll play.
Memphis pride itself on being the best young team in the association so the starting backcourt will want to send the Pels a message about who is the best in the Southwest Division and the better young Western Conference squad.
So, again, unless there is more to these injuries than reported they’ll suit up. Ziaire Williams (knee), Jaren Jackson Jr. (foot), and Danny Green (knee) are out indefinitely.
New Orleans Pelicans
Six Pelicans are averaging double-digit scoring with Zion Williamson (23.5) and Brandon Ingram (21.4) leading the way while Jonas Valanciunas is averaging a double-double (13.8 points, 10.1 rebounds).
Despite his natural role being a shooting guard CJ McCollum has assumed the point without hiccups filling up the stat sheet with 17.8 points, 6.3 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.4 steals.
The Pelicans are scoring 116.5 points per game ranking sixth overall. They rank 6th for field goal percentage (47.9%) and tied in tenth for 3-point percentage (36.5%).
Defensively, the Pelicans allow 113 points per game ranking 13th while holding them to 46.4 percent from the field (tied 15th) and they possess the best perimeter defense holding opponents to 31.3 percent from beyond the arc.
E.J. Liddell (knee) and Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) are questionable for Tuesday.
