Saturday, November 4 finds two Western Conference foes entering their Third week of play in the 2017-18 regular season for the Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers. The Grizzlies were on top of the conference but with a recent two game losing streak have since fallen mid table.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Clippers taking the series three to one. The Clippers hold the all-time record against the Grizzlies with a 43-40 record.
Aaron Gordon wasn’t the first option on the Orlando Magic’s game-winning play, but he came through when he got the ball. Gordon made a 3-pointer with 52 seconds left to erase Memphis’ only lead of the fourth quarter as the Magic beat the Grizzlies 101-99 on Wednesday night.
The assist on the 23-footer that gave the Magic a 100-99 lead came from Evan Fournier, for whom the play initially was designed.
Orlando held leads throughout the fourth quarter, by no more than five points after the first minutes of the period. But Memphis could only take the lead once — at 99-97 — on a floating bank shot by Marc Gasol with 1:04 left.
Gordon’s game-winning 3 gave the Magic the lead back for good, although Orlando committed three of its 24 turnovers in the final 36.2 seconds.
Tyreke Evans led the Grizzlies with 32 points, while Gasol finished with 22 points and nine rebounds. James Ennis III scored 14 points for Memphis, which played without starting point guard Mike Conley, who is nursing a sore left Achilles.
Grizzlies: Evans’ 32 points, was his first 30-point performance since scoring 34 points against Golden State on December 14, 2014.
Mario Chalmers started in Conley’s spot, his first start of the season. Gasol, as he was in Monday’s game against Charlotte, was listed as questionable with a left ankle problem, but played.
Los Angeles Clippers
There was no better opponent for the Clippers to get their verve back than facing the dreadful Dallas Mavericks. All it took was for the Clippers to play with enough exuberance and drive to dispatch the Mavericks 119-98 Wednesday night at Staples Center.
In running over the 1-8 Mavericks, the Clippers (5-2) snapped a two-game losing streak. Perhaps more importantly, the Clippers had recovered from having seen their vitality zapped in the wake of another loss to the Golden State Warriors on Monday night.
None of the Clippers starters played in the fourth quarter, but four of them scored in double-figures. Blake Griffin led the way with 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
Austin Rivers had another solid game with 19 points on seven-for-12 shooting, two for four from three-point range. Danilo Gallinari was stellar with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. DeAndre Jordan chipped in with 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
Lou Williams came off the bench to provide the Clippers with 17 points on five-for-eight shooting, two for three on three-pointers. Doc Rivers even went to his reserves early, letting Montrezl Harrell and rookie Sindarius Thornwell get some run in the second quarter when the game was still close.
Harrell showcased his skills, scoring six of his eight points in the second. Thornwell, a rookie, was solid with three total points.
