Of the five-game holiday slate, the NBA nailed the marquee time slot by featuring the young upstart Memphis Grizzlies making their Christmas Day debut facing the defending champion Golden State Warriors.
Unfortunately, the injury to Stephen Curry takes some wind out of the sails but Ja Morant is Box Office so he and his Grizzly cohorts will be ready to put on a show.
In fact, they’ll probably revel in showing the Dubs how difficult it is to win without their superstar something Memphis is all too familiar with having lost 2-4 in the 2022 Semi-Finals to the Warriors with Morant sidelined by injury in the final three games.
This is the first time the teams are meeting since that playoff series and will play four times this season with Golden State hosting again on January 25th while Memphis will host on March 9th and 18th.
Memphis routed the Suns 125-100 on Friday while the Dubs finished the road trip in Brooklyn Wednesday getting thrashed 143-113 by the Nets who dropped 91 points on them in the first half.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Grizzlies winning three of the four contests. The Warriors hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 51 of their 99 matches.
Memphis Grizzlies
For the first time this season, the Grizzlies’ primary starting unit played together. Desmond Bane made an earlier-than-expected return from injury to join Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr, Dillon Brooks, and Steven Adams
The backcourt was rusty combining to shoot 8 of 27 but the front court made up for it with Jackson’s double-double (24 points, 11 rebounds), Adams’ 11 boards, and Brandon Clarke chipping in 24 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Morant also collected a double-double (12 points, 11 assists) while Bane finished with 17 points and Brooks scored 16.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 115.7 points per game ranking seventh overall. Memphis shoots 46.8% from the field ranking 17th, and 31.2% from the perimeter ranking 16th.
Since Jaren Jackson Jr. has returned the Grizzlies have made huge strides defensively owning the best opponent field goal percentage of 44.6%. They rank eighth for opponents scoring 110.9 points and jumped three spots in week 10 from 15th to 12 for opponent perimeter percentage 35.1%.
Danny Green (knee) is out indefinitely.
Golden State Warriors
Unlike the Grizzlies, the Warriors aren’t new to the holiday slate appearing 31 times (14-17) to be exact, and boast arguably two of the top-five holiday games ever.
Many cite the 2016 match versus the Cavaliers as the best but I far prefer the 2013 contest versus the Clippers. It was sort of Curry’s formal announcement to the NBA world – this young team had arrived.
It featured jaw-dropping dimes, killer 3-point shooting, and some nasty defense, plus there were ejections — it was the epitome of what every Christmas match tries to live up to.
The Dubs average 116.5 points per game (5th) while shooting 47.8% from the field (10th) and 38.0% from deep (5th).
In contrast to their opponent, the Warriors’ defensive stats are sliding off a cliff allowing 117.9 points (27th) and efficiencies of 47.1% from the field (17th) and 36.3% from deep (19th) — they ranked 26th, 13th, and 12th less than a week ago!
Donte DiVincenzo (illness) is probable, while Andrew Wiggins (abdominal) was upgraded joining JaMychal Green (quarantine) as questionable. Curry (shoulder) and Andre Iguodala (hip) are out.

There is no sugarcoating the fact – – it sucks Curry is injured because you know he would’ve embraced the back-and-forth with Morant and this matchup had all the ingredients to become an instant classic.
I don’t want to jinx its potential, but unless Klay Thompson channels his 37-point quarter (or something of that ilk) I think the Grizzlies will serve up something akin to the Harlem Globetrotters.
Memphis was underestimated entering this season and constantly hear they would’ve lost with or without a healthy Morant in the playoffs.
Unlike some teams (cough Phoenix) the Grizzlies know precisely how to deliver a message when they feel slighted so expect a high-flying Morant as he cements which team everyone will be buzzing about on Christmas Day.
