Tuesday, December 20th, finds the Memphis Grizzlies playing the Denver Nuggets in the first of three scheduled meetings. Memphis will host on February 25th and Denver will host the final meeting on March 3rd.
The Grizzlies last played Saturday losing 109-115 to the Thunder while the Nuggets defeated the Hornets 119-115 on Sunday behind a massive Nikola Jokic performance.
The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 60 of their 99 meetings. Last season the squads played four times with the Nuggets taking three of the four contests.

Unlike the Nuggets, Memphis has capitalized on lower-tier opponents. In fact, of their 10 losses they’ve only lost to two sub .500 teams with Ja Morant, Desmond Banes, and Jaren Jackson Jr. out versus the Wizards plus Morant got ejected before halftime versus OKC.
Ja Morant averages 26.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 7.7 assists, and 1.1 steals while attempting 20.6 field goals per game, 5.0 perimeter shots, and 8.6 free throws shooting 45.3%, 33.9%, and 73.4% respectively.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 116.2 points per game ranking sixth overall. Memphis shoots 46.8% from the field ranking 16th, and 35.6% from the perimeter ranking 15th.
Defensively, Memphis allow their opponents to score 111.4 points per game (10th). Opponents shoot 44.7% from the field (1st) and 35.7% from deep (16th).

He’s taking 15.1 shots and connecting at 62.1 percent efficiency from the field shooting 31.8 percent from the perimeter on 2.5 attempts and getting to the line 7.0 times per match connecting at an 80.2 percent efficiency.
Denver ranks eighth in scoring averaging 115.8 points per game and first for proficiency from the field: 50.5% and possesses the second-best perimeter percentage: 38.7%.
Defensively, they rank 17th for opponent scoring allowing 114.8 points per game, while foes shoot 48.8% from the field and 36.8% from the perimeter ranking 29th and 24th overall.
Nikola Jokic (knee) is probable, Michael Porter Jr. (heel) is doubtful, Jamal Murray (knee) Jeff Green (back) and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (lower leg contusion) are questionable

Frequent followers know the Nuggets were my pick to win the West (Grizzlies my dark horse) so it’s a tough choice. Each team has an MVP candidate but the x-factors could decide the game.
Jaren Jackson Jr. and Dillon Brooks defense of Jokic and Murray will be crucial for Memphis while Aaron Gordon and Bones Hyland’s two-way play will be vital for Denver.
Memphis arguably has more statement-worthy victories but it feels like Denver needs this win more and while the injury report is throwing up warning signs I’m going with the points and the Nuggets.
