Wednesday, December 7th, the Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors meet for the first of two scheduled matches this season. LA will host the second meeting on March 10th.
LA is on a six-game road trip and playing a back-to-back set having lost 102-116 to the Cavaliers on the front side while the Raptors last played Monday in a 110-116 loss to the Celtics.
Last season, the teams played twice each winning on the other team’s court. The Lakers hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors in 30 of 51 matches although Nick Nurse is 6-2 versus LA since assuming the helm in Toronto.
Los Angeles Lakers
In case you were curious how essential the recent play of Anthony Davis has been to this iteration of the Lakers you got your answer on Tuesday as the big man had to leave the game eight minutes into the match with flu-like symptoms.
While LA hasn’t submitted their injury report yet the presumption is Davis will be out on Wednesday and if not how effective will he be?
LeBron has feasted in games back home in Cleveland but without Davis, he simply didn’t have enough weapons to keep the game competitive.
Fortunately, it’s not an injury to Davis so presumably he’ll be back soon, but make no mistake unless he’s playing at an MVP level the Lakers will return to the basement.
LA allows opponents to score an average of 115.2 points per game ranking 21st. Their opponents shoot 46.4% from the field (12th) and 33.6% from behind the arc (4th).
The Lakers score 114.2 points per game (12th) while shooting 47.1 percent from the field and 32.2 percent from the perimeter ranking 12th and 28th respectively.
INJURY UPDATE: per the official NBA injury report – Davis (flu) confirmed out, but the bigger news is LeBron James (ankle) is also out in addition to Wenyen Gabriel (shoulder) while Patrick Beverley (knee) is doubtful.
Toronto Raptors
Nick Nurse called the match versus the Celtics a perfect opportunity to measure where his team was at and he got both positive and negative results to mull over.
Scottie Barnes had one of his better efforts but the defense is still lagging compared to where he was last season which might be partially linked to his recent ankle and knee injuries as he’s getting beat by the speedier guards (something that didn’t happen last season).
Pascal Siakam continues to thrive as he did Monday with 29 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. OG Anunoby is also stepping up on both ends of the court. But, the concern centers on Fred VanVleet who is shooting so poorly he was passing up shots in the second half.
On offense, the Raptors score 110.8 points per game (22nd) shooting 45.1% from the field (25th) and 33.0% from deep (25th).
Defensively, the Raptors allow 109.8 opponent points per game ranking (7th) while they shoot 48.4% (26th) from the field and 35.4% from deep (14th).
Juancho Hernangomez (ankle), Otto Porter Jr. (toe dislocation) and Precious Achiuwa (ankle) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Lakers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games.
- Toronto is 6-2 SU in their last 8 games hosting LA.
- Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games on the road.
- Toronto is 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games played in December.
Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
VanVleet’s shot and associated lack of confidence is concerning so this matchup couldn’t come at a better time. LA’s a middling defensive team who struggles to stop guards specifically, so this could be the perfect opportunity for him to break out of his funk.
Toronto needs to avoid their penchant for poor first quarters and jump on the older Lakers early since they played last night. An early Raptors lead might lead to Darvin Ham not wanting to tax LeBron and his vets who still have two games to play on this road trip.
I’m a little antsy about the healthy spread but at the same time, I have a feeling this could be over early.
Update: with the injury report finally in and both AD/LeBron out the Raptors covering seems far more achievable.
