Saturday, November 26th, the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs play the third of four scheduled matches this season. The Lakers won the initial meeting on November 20th (123-92).
These teams played on Friday on the front side of a duo baseball and back-to-back set. At the time of posting LA led 79-75 after three quarters. The Lakers will host the final meeting between the clubs on January 25th.
Last season, the squads played four times with the teams splitting the regular season series. The Spurs hold the all-time record having bested the Lakers in 92 of their 181 matches.
Los Angeles Lakers
After missing the last five games (and 6 of 7) with a myriad of different listed injuries including his groin and foot, LeBron James returned to the court on Friday night in San Antonio.
It’s the perfect opponent for him to ease his way back into the flow and shake off any rust he might have given the Spurs don’t have a ton of size and aren’t particularly adept defensively.
LA allows opponents to score an average of 114.3 points per game ranking 21st. Their opponents shoot 46.3% from the field ranking 12th and 33.9 percent from behind the arc ranking sixth overall.
The Lakers score 110.7 points per game (19th) while shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from the perimeter ranking 21st and dead last respectively.
Juan Toscano-Anderson (back), and Max Christie (quarantine) were listed as probable for Friday but as of posting they had not entered the game. Patrick Beverley will miss the next three games serving a league-mandated suspension.
San Antonio Spurs
At least once a week I envision Gregg Popovich snickering in a corner about the prospect of the Spurs landing Victor Wembanyama and immediately returning to the postseason for a deep run in 2023-24.
So every time they lose I just don’t worry about it because they are so well-managed, Pops and RC will always keep the Spurs moving ahead.
On offense, the Spurs average 110.1 points per game ranking 21st overall. San Antonio shoots 46.4 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from the perimeter ranking 19th and 16th respectively.
The Spurs allow their opponents to score 120.7 points per game on average which is the most by any team in the association.
San Antonio is also struggling to limit their opponents’ efficiency, also ranking 30th in opponent field goal 50.9% and perimeter percentage: 40.1%.
Jordan Hall (finger) was probable for Friday but hadn’t played as of this posting. Doug McDermott (ankle) is questionable while Josh Richardson (ankle) is doubtful for Saturday. Blake Wesley (MCL) is out indefinitely

Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Prediction:
You have to wonder what Russell Westbrook is thinking with Dennis Schroder getting the starting rotation nod over him. Even though Schroder isn’t a 3-point sniper he’s arguably more of a ‘classic point guard’ and is definitely more adaptable so he fits the LeBron – AD dynamic better.
That trio of PGs though (Beverley, Westbrook, Schoder) is by far the oddest trio of all 30 teams both in terms of their skill sets and their demeanor.
I’m not convinced the Spurs can’t win this game — but the Lakers do look better now that they have a few more bodies back. Never mind they still have copious spacing issues and no 3-point shooting which will get exposed against better defensive teams but they should be fine against Pops’ purposeful tankers.
