The Oklahoma City Thunder take on the Lakers in this early season Western Conference showdown.
The Thunder have won 8 in a row in the head to head series and the average margin of victory was 28 points.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Kobe Bryant era is over in Los Angeles, and this young Lakers core should be much improved after getting rid of Byron Scott as head coach. Luke Walton will bring in a faster paced offense, and utilize the strengths of his roster to get the most out of the offense.

Last year’s #2 overall pick D’Angelo Russell showed flashes of promise, but spent much of the season in Byron Scott’s doghouse. This year he should break out under Walton and show the skills he had at Ohio State that made him worthy of a pick. He will have Russell Westbrook to defend so I don’t expect him to have a huge offensive game.
After fully recovering from a season long injury his rookie season, Julius Randle bounced back last year and averaged 11 points and 10 boards. He has started this season off pretty good and is averaging 12 points, 5 rebounds and almost 4 assists in the early stages of the year.
He faces a front line that has Steven Adams and Enes Kanter, so he should be able to score points at will when Kanter is defending him. 15 points and 9 boards won’t be out of the question in this game.

The Lakers defense has been surprisingly opportunistic this year, averaging 8 steals per game. If they can force OKC into early mistakes and run in transition, this one may be an upset.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Two major roster moves affected the Thunder this season. Kevin Durant is a loss that can’t be replaced, and has been talked about every day since he left, but trading Serge Ibaka for Victor Oladipo was an excellent deal.
Russell Westbrook has always played with a harnessed aggression, and with him being the #1 scoring option I expect him to finish this season as the league MVP. He destroyed the Suns on Friday night. Dropping 51 points to go with 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
Will keep up this pace of 41 PPG all season? Of course not. However it won’t surprise me to see him average 30 points, 9 assists, and 9 rebounds, which should clearly keep him in the MVP discussion.

As mentioned previously trading for Victor Oladipo was the smart call by Thunder management. Not only did they shed an aging and declining Serge Ibaka, they got a hungry two way guard to complement Russell Westbrook.
Oladipo’s defensive ability will improve an already good defense at the wings with him and Andre Roberson on the outside.
Steven Adams is a strong defensive presence on the Thunder front line, but he has been used more on offense this season. He had 6 turnovers in the win over Phoenix so he must protect the ball better.
If he can average 10 points per game on offensive put backs and lobs, the Thunder will be a strong test for the Warriors in the playoffs.
