Friday, December 17th, finds the Los Angeles Lakers facing the Minnesota Timberwolves for the second time this season. In the initial match on November 17th, the Lakers won 107-83.
The clubs will play twice more this season with the Lakers hosting January 2nd and the Wolves on March 16th.
Both teams last played on Wednesday with the Lakers needing overtime to defeat the Doncic-less Mavericks (107-104) while the Wolves beat the Nuggets 124-107.
Last season, the Lakers swept the three-game regular-season series. The Lakers hold the all-time record having bested the Wolves in 82 of their 119 matches
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers won their sixth game in eight matches but shouldn’t get too excited just yet. Four of those teams (Pistons, Kings, Magic, Thunder) have sub .500 records (29-82) while the Celtics and Mavs are 14-14.
That’s a 57-110 combined record of those six clubs. Diving into those wins it’s notable that Jaylen Brown and Luka Doncis didn’t play and the latter game versus the Mavericks required overtime to win.

So while the networks boast of this recent run of Lakers wins don’t get fooled because there is still ample work to do. They had their big three in the game versus Dallas with rookie Austin Reaves hitting the game-winning basket.
LeBron James led the scoring with 24 points with Russell Westbrook (23 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists) and Anthony Davis (20 points, 12 rebounds) each registering double-doubles.
LA was one of the many teams hit by positive tests this week as an increase in testing resulted in 27 NBA players entering health and safety protocols.
Three Lakers were in quarantine including Talen Horton-Tucker, Dwight Howard, and Malik Monk but on Thursday the team updated Russell Westbrook and Avery Bradley have also entered quarantine to meet health and safety standards.
Trevor Ariza (ankle) is ramping up his efforts to return to the court but remains out as does Kendrick Nunn (knee).
Minnesota Timberwolves
Could my preseason dark horse Minnesota Timberwolves actually be living up to my expectations? I’m fearful of fully committing to that fact but they are showing something lately and I’ll keenly watch to see what moves (if any) Minny makes prior to the trade deadline.
What is clear is the Big 3 of Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards, and D’Angelo Russell are meshing and if the Wolves can surround them with defensive players and shooters — watch out.
Edwards seems destined to make a rise into All-Star status as perhaps the most athletic player in the association. On Wednesday he scored 38 points but it wasn’t his jaw-dropping dunks that were the focus — rather it was his ten 3-pointers (ties franchise-best in a single game).
KAT also made a mark reaching 10,000 career points joining Kevin Garnett as the only Wolves player to do so. Towns scored 32 on the night. Russell had a complete effort with 16 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
The Wolves hit 16 perimeter shots in the first half (the most by any team this season) and shot 23 of 48 in the match.
Minnesota is one (if not the only) team with no players on the injured list.
