Thursday, May 6th finds the Los Angeles Lakers meeting the LA Clippers for the third and final time this season. The Clippers have already won the tiebreaker by taking the December 22nd (116-109) and April 4th (104-86) matches.
Both clubs are battling for seeding although in different areas of the ladder. The Lakers are fighting with the Blazers and Mavericks for the fifth through seventh seeds with each trying to stay out of the play-in tournament.
Conversely, the Clippers are battling the Sun, Jazz, and Nuggets for positioning in the home court tier and likely to finish third or fourth.
It would be a great first round series but not one the NBA would be thrilled happening that soon.
Los Angeles Lakers
The three-game losing streak was ended with the win versus the Nuggets. LeBron James didn’t play in that game as he experienced pain in the same ankle that caused him to miss 20 games.
Getting James healthy is the priority, but LA also has to worry about Dennis Schroder who’ll miss 10 to 14 days due to health and safety protocols.
Anthony Davis will have to carry the load for now and played much better versus the Nuggets than he had during the losing streak.
AD scored 25 points with seven rebounds, an assist, and three blocks. Four of his teammates scored in double figures including Alex Carusso (11) plus Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Marc Gasol who all scored 10.
The upcoming schedule is daunting with this Clippers match followed by the Blazers, Suns, and Knicks prior to getting three lower-seeded teams (Rockets, Pacers, Pelicans) to close out the season.
Anthony Davis (right calf strain), Kyle Kuzma (left thumb sprain), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (ankle sprain), Marc Gasol (left pinkie finger fracture) are probable.
Talen Horton-Tucker (calf strain) is questionable while James (ankle) and Schroder (protocols) are out.
LA Clippers
Like the Lakers, the Clippers suffered their own three-game losing streak and barely beat the Raptors on Tuesday despite the latter missing four core contributors including starters Kyle Lowry and OG Anunoby.
Yet, with Toronto so injury-depleted at game end LA locked down defensively to pull out the 105-100 victory.
In each of their last four games, there have been segments of the game where the Clippers’ offense seems stuck in quicksand so that has to be concerning for Ty Lue.
In his second game back, Kawhi Leonard played 33 minutes scoring 13 points with three rebounds and five assists.
His running mate Paul George carried more of the load scoring 22 points on 8 of 16 from the field while Marcus Morris also tallied 22 points on a more efficient 8 of 11.
Serge Ibaka (back) remains out having last played March 14th. Amir Coffey (health and safety protocols) is also out.
