On Saturday, April 24th, the Los Angeles Lakers meet the Dallas Mavericks for the third and final time this season. The Lakers won the initial meeting on Christmas Day 138-115 while Dallas won the recent contest played two days ago (Thursday) 115-110.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Lakers taking three of the four contests. The Lakers hold the all-time record having won 114 matches of the 162 played.
Los Angeles Lakers
After missing 30 games, Anthony Davis returned to the hardcourt for the first time since February 14th. Davis was on a minutes restriction and the rust showed as he shot 2 of 10 from the field for four points adding four rebounds in 17 minutes.
Andre Drummond delivered a double-double of 14 points, 19 rebounds plus three assists, a steal, and three blocks.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led the Lakers scoring effort with 29 points while Dennis Schroder added 25 points and Montrezl Harrell chipped in with 14.
The NBA injury report for the Lakers is extensive. Despite Davis’ return, on Thursday he’s on the report listed as probable. That’s likely so the medical staff can gauge his recovery after being out so long.
The trio of Andre Drummond (toe), Dennis Schroder (foot infection), and Markieff Morris (ankle) are also all listed as probable.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (ankle) and Marc Gasol (pinkie – volar plate fracture) are both questionable while LeBron James (ankle) and Jared Dudley (knee) are out.
Dallas Mavericks
Between the Mavericks’ Thursday night win versus the Lakers and the Blazers’ loss on Friday to the Grizzlies, the teams swapped positions on the playoff ladder.
Dallas had failed to capitalize in similar recent scenarios but now that they’ve climbed into the sixth seed their focus will be to remain there. Luka Doncic specifically vocalized his frustration about teams who were in the seventh
In the win versus the Lakers, Kristaps Porzingis suffered a bad ankle sprain in the third quarter but scored 19 points and six rebounds in the 29 minutes he played.
Luka Doncic flirted with a triple-double registering 30 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, and three steals. All five Mavericks starters scored in double figures plus Willie Cauley-Stein off the bench.
Notably, the Mavericks appear to be easing J.J. Redick into the lineup playing him an average of 12.4 minutes through the last six games.
Rick Carlisle uses the 3-point sniper in short bursts with 3.2 of his 4.7 field goals attempted from deep. He’s averaging 5.8 points and 1.5 rebounds.
Watch for Carlisle to slowly increase his usage down the stretch as his presence was meant to offer depth for the playoffs.
Maxi Kleber (lower back contusion) missed the game Thursday and like Porzingis (ankle) is questionable for Saturday. Tyrell Terry (personal) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Lakers are 8-2 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Lakers are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
The Lakers injury report is concerning unless it’s simply due to an abundance of caution. However, the team who might be more concerned is Dallas who were outrebounded by LA and if Porzingis and Kleber are out again that will make their job much more difficult.
Alternatively, another win by the Mavs would draw them within a game and a half of LA. Frankly, it’s not surprising Davis targeted these games for his return – that’s how important they are.
