An intriguing match-up takes place in the heart of Lone Star State on Thursday night as ‘That Other L.A. Team’, the Los Angeles Clippers, travels east to tangle and jangle with the Spurs, long part of the NBA’s royalty. Times though, they are a-changin’.
This time around, it’s the Spurs that have the .500 record, while the visiting Clippers (long a laughingstock in the league) are in a nice dogfight for playoff position in the Western Conference.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clip are coming off a decisive loss to the league-leading Toronto Raptors, so maybe that isn’t such a calamity, but they still need to get it turned around in Texas. It’s been mostly good news for Los Angeles so far in 2018; with the foundation of their former playoff team long gone, seven games over .500 is better than most people forecasted for the Clippers.

The Clippers have a really nice season from Tobias Harris to thank for their strong play to date. Flamboyant owner Steve Ballmer’s team currently sits tied with the cross-town Lakers for second in the Pacific division and a fourth seed in the West. The Raptors beat them handily though, and they couldn’t crack 100 points against Toronto’s stout defense.
San Antonio isn’t a pushover on the defensive end either, so the Clippers need a better offensive performance especially from shooter Danilo Gallinari. If the Italian, who is averaging nearly 19 points per game, starts knocking down threes, the Clippers will have a decent shot at grabbing a road win.

Last night, Los Angeles got nice bench performances from huge, 7’3 Euro Boban Marjanovic and guard Tyrone Wallace. Strong efforts like that can help take the pressure of Harris and Gallinari, and it will help the Clippers match up well with the Spurs, who have always featured envious depth under Coach Pop’s system.
The Clippers should want to rectify Tuesday night’s fizzling offense, and if they can fix it, L.A. should be in pole position to head back to Cali at eight games on the happy side of .500.
San Antonio Spurs
No one wants to get too hasty as we approach just a third of the way through the regular season, but it appears like we’re nearing the end of an era in San Antonio under visionary coach Gregg Popovich. The Spurs sit with just a .500 record, currently out of the playoff picture in the West, and they look good, just no longer good enough for sustained success.
Toronto cast-off DeMar DeRozan carries the burden offensively for San Antonio, to join with underachieving big man LaMarcus Aldridge. Toronto swapped DDR for Kawhi Leonard in the off-season and both players have performed well in their new environs. Still, it hasn’t been enough for San Anton’ to be more that merely average.

Let’s be serious: Success is meant to be cyclical for all teams. Sure, Coach Pop just passed Pat Riley for fourth on the all-time wins list for a head coach, but the Spurs have just staved off regression longer than almost all other teams. But eventually, that ball keeps on bouncin’. The Spurs certainly could scrap their way into a low seed in the West, but they likely won’t do any better than that in 2018-19.

Free Los Angeles Clippers vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Prediction:
DeRozan versus Harris should be a cool match-up on Thursday night, as they are the teams’ two wing players that carry the bulk of the scoring load.
For the home team to wrest control of this game, they’ll need a tertiary option like Patty Mills to get hot from beyond the arc. DeRozan has always been more of a midrange scorer in the mould of Kobe Bryant, but that’s a bit of an obsolete model in today’s NBA.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Clippers ATS
L.A’s Gallinari has got the ‘three and D’ that the league now demands, but he must play better than he did against Toronto. If he and Harris have bounce-back performances, I like the Clippers to grab a win in the hostile confines of the AT&T Center.
