Western Conference top dogs the L.A. Clippers travel to the Lone Star State on Sunday, to do battle with Mark Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks have shown some nice pieces thus far in 2018-19, but do they have the horses to run with the conference’s elite?
The Mavs will have to rely on a budding young backcourt, while containing the Clip’s dominant rebounding prowess will be a challenge.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clip haven’t let a re-design over the past couple of years affect their ability to play basketball at a high level. Coach Doc Rivers is still getting a lot out of his roster, led by underappreciated guard Lou Williams and strong board work from Montrezl Harrell, who was a crack offseason acquisition for this team. Los Angeles has another underappreciated talent in Tobias Harris, who does a little bit of everything. The former Tennessee Volunteer has put up 21.7 PPG so far to go with 8.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Not a lot of people talk about Harris, but you won’t find many more complete players out there.
The Clippers are feeling good, as they’ve won their last four straight contests. They also must like what they are seeing from Canadian rookie Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Toronto native and Kentucky product has been scoring in the double-digits in this his maiden campaign, and he’s chipping in with over three assists and rebounds per game, also. He’ll only improve as the season progresses.
You have to expect Golden State to eventually get everyone back healthy, start figuring it out and ultimately start running away with the Western Conference crown, but who knows? Maybe regular season winning is getting just old hat in Silicon Valley. In SoCal, at least, the Clippers and their fans are savouring their place in the league standings.
If Los Angeles plays its game and controls the glass against Dallas, you have to like their chances of wresting a road win away from the home team Mavericks.
The Mavs are playing OK ball, currently sitting at .500 and sitting just outside the Western Conference playoff picture. For one thing, the guard/forward combo of 19-year old Slovenian Luca Doncic and Dennis Smith Jr., the second-year NC State product, has been working gangbusters for Dallas. Smith is putting up nearly 14 points and four assists per, while Doncic is leading the Mavs in scoring (18.5 PPG) and exhibiting some nice athleticism.
Elsewhere, veterans are helping tutor the young bloods. Thirty-two year old Texas native Wesley Matthews has been putting up over 15 points per contest from the guard position, and Harrison Barnes is right behind Doncic in team scoring. Let’s not forget that Dallas also has the size and rim-protecting presence that teams covet with lifetime Cowboys fan DeAndre Jordan.
The Mavs have far from the most talent in the league, but their effective mix of age and skill-sets seems to have made a cohesive blend for 2018-19. The team is coming off a frustrating loss at the hands of the Lakers, where veteran leader J.J. Barea was kicked out of the game for berating the refs, but before that Dallas had won three straight, including wins over the Boston Celtics and the Houston Rockets, not exactly league pushovers. A home win against the Clippers would be a real coup d’etat for this club.

Free Los Angeles Clippers vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
Dallas has been pretty decent, but the Clippers have been on another plane so they must be considered the favorite in this one. It isn’t out of the realm of possibility that the Mavs could come away with a home victory on Sunday afternoon in Dallas, but the Clippers’ potent blend of speed and rebounding ability will be tough to best. The fellow youth-focused Sacramento Kings discovered that earlier in the week.
Betting Pick: Clippers by 7
Take the visiting Clippers in this one.
Los Angeles should win by a few, and if ‘Sweet Lou’ Williams can start striping it from beyond the arc, it could be a more decisive win still.
