Tuesday, November 29th, finds the LA Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers tipping off in their first of three meetings. The clubs don’t play again until late in the campaign with Portland hosting on March 19th while LA hosts on April 8th.
Both teams last played on Sunday with the Clippers defeating the Pacers 114-100 while the Blazers lost 97-111 to the Nets.
The Blazers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 148 wins in 235 meetings. Last season, the teams played four times with the Clippers winning three of the four contests.
LA Clippers
The Clippers average 106.4 points per game ranking dead last in the association. While they might not be scoring in droves, the shots they are taking are efficient — 47.8% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking ninth and 15th respectively.
Factor in that Kawhi Leonard has only played in five games and Paul George has missed five but is currently out and expected to miss at least two more games.
LA is built around these two stars who are the main offensive threats. Given they’re expected back shortly, it’s doubtful Ty Lue is stressing about the offense, but this comes with the caveat, the concern isn’t about them returning it’s about KEEPING THEM HEALTHY!
For now, LA is relying on their depth which they got Sunday with six players delivering double-figure scores and Ivica Zubac beasting with 31 points, and 29 rebounds (12 offensive boards).
Defense is where the Clippers are rolling ranking top-five in all three major categories. To wit, they limit foes to 106.8 points per game which is the second-fewest allowed.
They also rank second for opponent field goal percentage of 44.5% and fourth for perimeter percentage of 33.3%.
Kawhi Leonard (knee) is questionable for Tuesday while Paul George (hamstring) and Luke Kennard (calf) are expected back in early December.
Portland Trail Blazers
Chauncey Billups’ squad began the season like a shot from a cannon registering a 9-3 record, but have gone 2-6 since then with the two victories coming against the Spurs and in overtime against the Knicks.

Jerami Grant is trying to pick up the offense but his defense suffered this past week (-45 last week per John Schuhmann).
Portland averages 109.7 points per game ranking 22nd while shooting 46.6% from the field and 37.6% from the perimeter ranking 18th and sixth respectively.
Defensively, the Blazers have witnessed opponents’ scoring average per game jump by almost three points in their last five games from 107.7 to 110.3 dropping them from sixth best to ninth overall.
They sit in the middle of the league for efficiency holding opponents to 47.0% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking 15th for both categories.
Drew Eubanks (back) is questionable. Lillard, Gary Payton II (conditioning), and Keon Johnson (hip) expected return date is early December.

The good news for the Blazers is five of the next seven games are at home — the bad news is six of those seven opponents are .500 or better (exception – Lakers).
The positive for LA is the ball is moving and without their stars, the onus is on best shot versus a primary scorer. The negative is they attempt the fewest shots (82.1 per game) and when everyone isn’t making a decent percentage or they dip even slightly defensively opponents gain the advantage.
As odd as it may sound if Kawhi is back I think the Blazers’ odds of winning improve because the team will try to integrate him which could impact their current rhythm. Either way, I’m taking the Blazers to win SU and cover.
