The Phoenix Suns battled in LA for a split versus the Clippers to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. Phoenix hosts Game 5, on Monday, July 28th with a view of winning securing their NBA Finals berth.
Game 4 was a defensive battle with the teams going scoreless over three minutes in the fourth (between 10:07 and 6:35) but Phoenix prevailing for the 84-80 victory.
Paul George led the way again albeit with more issues at the charity stripe. At game end, he missed another key free throw that sealed the Clippers’ fate.
George produced a double-double of 23 points and 16 rebounds which at face value sounds great – – but Playoff P shot 5 of 20 from the field 1 of 9 from deep and 12 of 18 from the line. Not exactly a great night at the office.
Reggie Jackson continued to be the secondary scorer to George as he offered 20 points. A game after Ivica Zubac got the best of Deandre Ayton he delivered another double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds but it was the Suns’ young center who won the Game 4 matchup.
Terance Mann offered 13 points as the only other double-figure contributor for the Clippers.
While some teams like the Hawks have benefited to go on deep runs in the playoffs the Suns have had to face the Lakers, Nuggets, and Clippers. Yes, they’ve experienced some luck with their opponent injuries but let’s be clear the Suns have also navigated injuries.
The difference is this Suns team plays with the same grit and heart regardless of who is on the court and finds a way to win.
Case in point, Devin Booker (8 of 22) and Chris Paul (6 of 22) combined to shoot 14 of 44 on Saturday. Booker led the scoring with 25 points while Paul produced 18 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and hit key free throws in clutch time.
Yet it was the performance of youngster Ayton that won the evening with his double-double of 19 points and 22 rebounds. Nine of those rebounds were on the offensive glass and he also offered three assists, a steal, and four blocks.
While Mikal Bridges and Jay Crowder won’t get the shine for their offensive production the job they are doing on defense punctuates why this Suns team is elite defensively and how everyone accepts their role.
Bridges scored just six points but beasted on the boards with 13 adding two blocks while Crowder scored a mere three points but grabbed seven boards, and also had a key block.
Abdel Nader who hadn’t played since March 23rd played five minutes and will offer another 3-point sniper for Monty Williams to call upon in Game 5.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Clippers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 3-7 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free LA Clippers vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
The hardest game to win is the closeout match and the Suns will have the added pressure of winning in front of a raucous home arena. The franchise has participated in two NBA Finals in 1976 and 1993 losing both.
Keep an eye on Chris Paul especially if the match is close at game end. He’s the Sums calming force but will the prospect of making his first NBA Finals in his 16-year career add to the pressure and nerves he’ll be feeling?
I’m still going to pick the Suns to close this out especially with the rumors that Kawhi Leonard won’t be back for this series and isn’t happy with the Clippers’ medical staff. That will add drama to the locker room and this group doesn’t strike me as the type of team who’ll want to battle without him long-term.
This is a low-scoring series with both clubs averaging 100 points but watch for the Suns to try to get a big early lead and if they do that I suspect LA will raise the white flag.
