Two teams remain standing as the NBA Finals tip off on Thursday, June 5th, with the Indiana Pacers facing the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Indy held the second-best record in the NBA as of the New Year (OKC was number 1) and found their way to this stage of the playoffs via wins against the Bucks (4-1), Cavaliers (4-1), and Knicks (4-2).
OKC got their berth following victories versus the Grizzlies (4-0), Nuggets (4-3), and Timberwolves (4-1).
Season Series
Last season, the squads played twice, with the Pacers sweeping the series while the Thunder returned the favor this season, sweeping Indy. The Thunder holds the all-time record, having bested the Pacers in 55 of their 101 matches
This is the first time in history these two clubs are meeting in the finals, and both clubs are theoretically (Seattle owned the Thunder when they won a title) seeking their first championship.
Indiana Pacers
Tyrese Haliburton is the straw that stirs the Pacers’ drinks. The point guard literally puts the word ‘pace’ in his team’s strategy by controlling the speed at which they play.

Free NBA Prediction:
While the Thunder were my preseason pick to win the Larry O’B, in fairness, the Pacers present the better Finals pairing than the Knicks would’ve.
That’s because they have an advantage in coaching (23 years of experience and a title for Rick Carlisle) but more importantly, represent arguably the next deepest roster besides OKC, and, like their opponent, Carlisle will go deep into his bench.
A few numbers to ponder entering Game 1:
- Indy holds the second-best offense of the postseason (Cavs: 1st|OKC: 3rd)
- In the Conference Finals, Indy scored 140 points off turnovers
- The Pacers will push the pace on both misses and makes (*notably, the Thunder have the second fastest pace in the playoffs while Indy ranks third~!)
- OKC tops the postseason in forced turnovers (18 per game) and points scored off those miscues (23.8 PPG).
- The Thunder have the decided edge on the glass, averaging 11.6 offensive rebounds and scoring 13.8 points on second chances.
Series matchups can make or break a title run, but this should be a well-matched series. Haliburton should see a myriad of defenders, including Lu Dort, Alex Caruso, and Cason Wallace, while JDub should draw the initial matchup on Siakam.
Conversely, Aaron Nesmith will draw the initial assignment on SGA while Siakam likely spends his time trying to slow either JDub or Chet Holmgren.
And that’s where things get interesting, as both teams will liberally use their benches to stay fresh and gain advantages. OKC has the edge defensively while the Pacers have more shooters.
One key could be the bigs with OKC being able to play three big men and even four (if they put Caruso at the five in small ball), so Myles Turner has a big assignment (he’s the x-factor for Indy in my humble opinion).
Andrew Nembhard will also be in tough as Brunson is a smaller guard, but dealing with a much taller (6’6″) SGA could be a stretch (no pun intended).
Ultimately, I think this series has the potential to be highly entertaining, and while many pundits are picking the Thunder in six, I’ll be surprised if they need more than five matches to hoist Larry O’B.
To that end, I expect Mark Daigneault to have his squad dialed into limiting Haliburton’s passing lanes as their primary focus while limiting Siakam’s touches and field goals as the secondary task.
I expect OKC to win one of the two contests at home by a wide margin, but Game 1 should be a feel-out game, which has me taking the points.
