(25-7) Houston Rockets vs. Boston Celtics (27-10)
The Rockets have lost three games in a row after a 13-game winning streak. They’ll get a chance to return to the win column on Thursday night, but it won’t be easy, on the road against Boston without one of its best players.
Clint Capela fractured his orbital bone on Christmas Day and will miss the next two games. That leaves most of the minutes at center for Nene Hilario. The Rockets will also go extra small for some of the game. Tarik Black will also get some minutes after a “DNP” in the last game with Capela available.
Chris Paul didn’t play on Christmas against Oklahoma City with a left abductor injury. There isn’t any word on him for Thursday but there seems to be a decent shot he’ll play. Houston has, of course, finally lost with Paul healthy on playing.
So what gives? Boston’s top defense or Houston’s explosive offense? It may come down to how many chances the Rockets get to run and that starts with its defense.
It’s also got a lot to do with the sort of shots the Celtics take and the offense that they run. They haven’t ran great offense of late and it’s been reflected in Kyrie Irving’s shot attempts and the wins and losses.
Boston has struggled, losing three of its last four games. Irving has hoisted a whole lot of shots, too.
Part of the reason is that Jaylen Brown isn’t completely healthy. He looks just a bit worn down at this point in his second NBA season. He’s listed as doubtful for Wednesday night’s game in Charlotte with a knee problem. The oddsmakers have reflected Brown’s potential absence in the line, where Boston is just a one-point favorite against one of the worst teams in the conference.
Brown has felt the burden of Gordon Hayward’s injury. He’s been tremendous but is also must be a little stressed, physically and mentally.
So the next week would be a perfect time for Al Horford to play at an All-Star level. He has been great all season, but on a smaller scale. If he could ramp up the volume for the next few games, it would give the Celtics a chance to regroup and get Brown healthy without dropping more ground in the Eastern Conference. It looks like the Raptors and Cavaliers are here to stay in a three-team race at the top of the standings.

Free Houston Rockets vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction: I’ll take Boston if Brown is back.
This should be a good one but Clint Capela is a large absence for Houston than Jaylen Brown would be for Boston. And Brown very well may play. I lean Houston if Brown is out but I’m going to assume he plays for now and think of Boston at home.
