Monday, November 21st, finds the Golden State Warriors and New Orleans Pelicans playing the second of four scheduled meetings. The Pelicans won the initial meeting 114-105 on November 4th. The Warriors will host the next two matches on March 3rd and 28th.
The Warriors are completing a back-to-back set having finally collected a road victory via their 127-120 effort versus the Rockets on Sunday while the Pelicans last played Friday losing 109-117 to the Celtics.
The Warriors hold the all-time record between the clubs with 43 wins in 68 meetings versus the Pelicans. Last season, the teams played three times with the Warriors taking two of the three contests.
Golden State Warriors
It took nine tries, but the Warriors finally won on the road. With the Western Conference’s worst team on the slate, it seemed that result was inevitable but it didn’t come quite as easily as expected.
Golden State jumped on the Rockets building a 12-point first-quarter lead. But, true to form, the reserves weren’t able to maintain that edge coughing up the lead with Houston eventually building their edge to nine.
Ultimately, the core took over with the trio of Stephen Curry (7-14), Klay Thompson (10-13), and Andrew Wigging (6-11) all shooting over 50 percent from outside.
After dealing with criticism about his regressing game, Thompson put on a vintage Klay performance scoring 41 while Curry scored 33 put dished a season-best 15 assists.
Klay was shooting 33 percent from deep coming into the match but just this one performance catapulted his average to 37.6%!
Golden State averages the third most (117.6) points per game while shooting 48% from the field (7th) and 38.5% from deep (tied with Pelicans/4th).
While the Dubs summon thoughts of the Splash brothers and 3-point shooting the reality is their defense and bench depth were much larger factors in winning their four titles.
Kerr has tried keeping one or two starters on the court with the reserves but the defensive chemistry is simply absent with those units and it’s forcing Kerr to shuffle his rotations.
Jordan Poole hasn’t found his groove and the young group’s issues have highlighted just how important Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II were to the Dubs’ success.
The defense has made some improvements by limiting opponents to 45.6% from the field (7th) and 35.5% from the perimeter (13th) but their foes are still averaging 117.4 points per game (27th).
Andre Iguodala (hip) is out indefinitely.
New Orleans Pelicans
Willie Green has the Pelicans performing well on both sides of the court but its different lineups provide their successes. The starters are a potent offensive lineup whereas the reserves are more defensive-oriented.
The end of games highlights this dynamic as Green has elected to bring in Jose Alvarado for the majority of the final frame and similarly replaces Jonas Valanciunas with Larry Nance Jr.
Offensively, the Pelicans are sixth for scoring averaging 116.3 points per game while shooting 48.1% from the field (6th) and 38.5% from the perimeter (4th).
Defensively, the Pelicans allow opponents to score 112.4 points per game, ranking 13th. New Orleans holds their opponents to 46.9 percent from the field tied with the Hornets in 20th and 33.4% from the perimeter ranking fifth.
Zion Williamson (ankle), Trey Murphy III (foot), and E.J. Liddell (knee) are all questionable for Monday.
