(35-6) Golden State Warriors vs. Houston Rockets (32-12)
This game should be a repeat of the back and forth contest from the December first.
The Warriors are riding a 4 game winning streak while Houston is stumbling having lost 3 of the last 4.
Houston won the first matchup in the season series 132-127 in double overtime.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors are coming into this one after dismantling the defending champs by 35 points.
Will Kevin Durant’s MVP votes be marred by the ultimate success of this super team? He continues to be one of the top players in the league and should be a leading candidate for MVP.
Durant was efficient against Lebron and the Cavaliers, going for 21 points on 9-16 shooting from the floor. He has not attacked the rim much during the last 3 games, taking just 7 free throw attempts total.
For Golden State to be dominant late in games the offense must flow through Durant and Curry, but if neither is getting to the rim can the offense be as effective?
Durant will have Trevor Ariza shadowing him for most of the game, but I still expect Durant to go off and reach 30+ points.
The Cavs backcourt defense couldn’t stop Steph Curry. He was 5-12 from behind the arc, finished with 20 points and dished out a season high 11 assists. He also won the anticipated head to head matchup with Kyrie Irving, holding Irving to just 17 points and helping force 6 turnovers.
Curry should have no problem scoring points against Houston, after putting up 28 points in the first meeting. He and Durant should combine for 60+ points on the night.
Klay Thompson has been on a streaky shooting stretch for the last couple of games. He shot 80% from 3 in a 20 point win against Detroit, but has also put up two 1-7 games from behind the arc in the last 5 contests.
With Trevor Ariza spending a majority of the game guarding Kevin Durant, I expect James Harden or Patrick Beverley to be matched up against Thompson. He will use his ability to shoot off the screen to make a few quick buckets to open the game, and should score 20 and grab 6 rebounds.
Draymond Green shouldn’t have any issues getting a triple double in this game going up against a weak Rockets front line. In the first meeting he scored 20 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and dished out 9 assists.
To think he will have trouble putting up similar numbers wouldn’t be the smart call, and Green should be the X factor for the offense.
James Harden has gotten 2 straight triple doubles, and put up a 40 point performance in the shocking loss to Miami Tuesday night. Harden was only 12-30 from the field but did knock down 12 of his 13 free throw attempts. Harden should get his usual points, but I don’t see him getting a third straight triple double.
Trevor Ariza should have a hard time defending Kevin Durant in this game, but he should become the #2 scorer on offense and try to force Durant or Klay Thompson into early foul trouble.
If he can get either of them on the bench early in the 2nd quarter the Rockets will have a good chance to get the victory.
