Tuesday, November 29th, the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks meet for the first of three scheduled contests this season and more notably for the first time since the Western Conference Finals. Dallas will host again on March 22nd while the Dubs will host on February 4th.
Both teams last played Sunday with the Warriors pummeling the Wolves 137-114 while the Mavericks lost 115-124 to the Bucks.
Last season the teams played four times with the Mavericks winning three of four contests. The Mavericks hold the all-time record having bested the Warriors in 89 of their 169 matches.
Golden State Warriors
Don’t look now but the defending champions seem to have rediscovered their mojo and by that, I mean their defense and 3-point dominance. The Dubs began the season 3-7 and lost eight consecutive road games.
Since then, the Warriors are 8-3 and moved back above .500 (11-10), plus in those 11 games, they are shooting 40.1% from the perimeter hitting an average of 17.9 deep balls per game (tops in the NBA).
Oh – and Steph Curry reentered the MVP conversation especially after posting a league-best plus +59 last week (per John Schuhmann)
Whether coincidence or not, it’s interesting that James Wiseman who played in the first 10 games (and made an appearance for 9:14 of the Spurs’ Nov. 14th game) was sent to the G-League.
While the Warriors are saying he was sent there to get more reps and gain experience it’s not like the G-League features a ton of pick-and-roll offense for him to improve his defense in that area (which is his greatest weakness, in my opinion).
The winning is impacting the offensive end the most as they average 117,8 points per game ranking third overall while shooting 47.8% from the field and 38.2% from the perimeter ranking sixth and fourth respectively.
Yet, the end of the hardwood the Dubs are clearly refocused on is defense and while they haven’t vaulted to the top of the leaderboard they are measurable improvements.
The Dubs allow opponents an average of 117.3 points per game ranking 28th and allow 46.0% field goal percentage and 35.1% perimeter percentage which ranks 13th and 21st.
Andre Iguodala (hip) is out indefinitely.
Dallas Mavericks
With the team struggling offensively, fans/bloggers are clamoring for Jason Kidd to start Christian Wood or at the very least to play him in clutch time
Critics point to his 17.1 points, and 7.6 rebounds (in 25.5 minutes) while shooting 43.9% from deep on 3.4 attempts per game. Sounds great right?
Well, let me play devil’s advocate… as a reserve Wood’s subpar defense hasn’t been fully exposed but if he starts you can be sure opponent coaches will isolate him in mismatches.
Perhaps the greatest red flag — TURNOVERS, although Luka has 3.5 turnovers per game he’s also playing 37.3 minutes, dishing 8.4 assists, and is the primary ballhandler. Wood averages 2.4 turnovers with 1.1 assists and that’s facing bench units primarily.
You get the point – he probably improves the offense but the question is how much will he hurt the defense.
There’s also the tidbit that Kemba Walker is rumored to be joining the Mavs — wonder if they’re hoping he’ll fill a similar role that Jalen Brunson provided (the irony of Walker’s last team being Brunson’s new team isn’t missed).
The Mavericks score 109.1 points per game ranking 26th overall while shooting 46.8% from the field and 34.5% from the perimeter ranking 19th and 26th respectively.
On defense, the Mavs rank third for opponent scoring allowing 107.3 points per game with foes shooting 47.7% from the field (24th) and 37.1% from the perimeter (25th) respectively.
Reggie Bullock (rest) is questionable for Tuesday – and after watching his performance over the weekend let’s hope it’s only rest he needs!

Dallas will try to slow the Dubs to a crawl ignoring offensive rebounds to stop the fast break and get back in transition. But, with the Warriors shooting lights out and the Mavs ranking 25th on perimeter D – this could get ugly!
AND — if Kidd succumbs to the pressure to start Wood you can bet Draymond Green and Steph Curry will be drooling at the prospect of attacking him.
The initial spread was a pick-em, then updated to the Warriors as one-point favorites. I’m banking on the Dubs to win SU and cover and expect BIG games from both Luka and Steph.
