Wednesday night on the shores of Lake Erie sees the rematch of an oft-played NBA Finals, but the circumstances couldn’t be any more different with King LeBron James no long populating the Cleveland roster. It’s remarkable how one player can make such a profound difference in this league.
These two clubs made for some entertaining spring match-ups not so long ago on the playoff landscape, but expect a vastly different result in Cleveland this week.
Golden State Warriors
The juggernaut Warriors have hit a couple of speed wobbles in the early regular season, and perhaps that is to be expected, when you can win just so easily and so convincingly. Regular season winning must just get boring for some of these guys.

It really seems like some of Golden State’s stars need to invent challenges to play in an engaged way during the regular season. It might not be the most endearing trait, but when you can win in the playoffs like they can, who cares? Even with Steph Curry nursing his way back from injury and D-man Draymond Green working his way back from a toe ailment, Golden State still has an embarrassing amount of riches.
Kevin Durant has proven time and again that he is maybe the most gifted pure offensive talent in the entire league. Being well aware of contenders like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Joel Embiid, James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Kawhi Leonard, it’s not hyperbole. You merely have to observe Durant’s four straight games with over 40 points to marvel at what this guy can do.

You’ve got Klay Thompson knocking down threes, Curry is closer and closer to coming back and being his old self and despite the dissension in the ranks, you want a healthy Green aboard, too. Durant and Green’s squabbling is not a good look for coach Steve Kerr and the franchise, but that is an issue for another day; no problem kicking the can down the road there. When everyone gets back, the Warriors will go back to being their old, damn-near-impossible-to-beat selves.
Hopefully Golden State got its careless loss out of the way when the Warriors dropped to the Detroit Pistons last week. It should be feasting time on a much weakened Cleveland squad.
Cleveland Cavaliers
With Kyrie Irving gone a couple seasons ago and LeBron bolting for sunnier pastures in L.A. in the offseason, the Cavaliers are a shell of their former composition. This team should be in full-on tank mode if they aren’t already. There are little snippets of talent with Jordan Clarkson (16+ points per game) and Tristan Thompson can still rebound and play a little defense, but this by and large, is a piss-poor squad.
It doesn’t help that the remaining star, Kevin Love, has been injured with a lower-body injury. He is eyeing a mid January return, but they probably won’t rush him back. In the meantime, it’s bite your lip and give it hell mode for the former NBA champs. The days of warring with Golden State for June riches are probably looking farther in the rearview mirror for Cleveland’s front-office staff.

If Cleveland want a snowball’s chance in Hell of winning this game, Clarkson must go off for a career night and the Cavs must pray that Golden State gets cold shooting from deep.

This game has blowout potential with the Warriors getting an early lead and maintaining it throughout. To that end, expect the Warriors to exploit Cleveland’s weaknesses in a little bit of history repeating.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Warriors -12.5
Golden State hasn’t been without its warts lately, but expect the multiple champs to win this one going away. It could be a nice lighthouse for their season, to get back to the Warriors’ consistently winning ways.
