It took about half a season, but everybody now knows the Detroit Pistons are nothing special.
They lost on the road in New Orleans on Monday night. Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins combined for 50, even after Davis left in the third quarter with a sprained ankle. It was the Pistons’ fifth loss in a row on the road and Stan Van Gundy called the defense out after the game.
Stanley Johnson did not play after giving it a shot in the pregame. Van Gundy hinted after the game that he would try to get Johnson into this game because the defense has been so bad. He’s missed five in a row with a hip issue.
Ish Smith’s numbers continue to look just fine, but the lack of wins has to be a reflection on the point guard’s extra minutes with Reggie Jackson out. Smith isn’t much of a defender, for one. That sets Detroit back tremendously.
He’s also not much of a point guard. He can dribble and score the ball, but what does he do for his teammates?
Brooklyn lost yet another close game on Monday night when Spencer Dinwiddie’s game-winner didn’t go in and the home Nets lost in overtime.
They’ve now defeated Minnesota and lost two-point games to both Boston and Toronto in their last three home tilts. Former Piston Spencer Dinwiddie is blossoming into a star years after a serious knee injury ended his college career. And it wouldn’t have happened without long-term injuries to both Jeremy Lin and D’Angelo Russell.
D’Lo is on his way back, though. He practiced with the G-League affiliate on Monday and reported no setbacks. There’s no hard timetable for his return, but it will surely shake the Nets up when it does happen.
In the meantime, Dinwiddie continues to be both the Nets’ best scorer and playmaker.

Free Detroit Pistons vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction: in light of recent events, Detroit buckles down on defense and keeps this one low.
Brooklyn has really played well on defense over its last three games. If they can hold Boston and Toronto, they should be able to hold the Pistons, who will also be defensive-minded after their head coach’s comments. This one should stay in the double-digits.
