The Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors meet for the final time this season with Dallas taking the November 4th contest (111-110). Both teams played Wednesday with Dallas losing 112-125 to the Celtics while the Raptors lost to the Nets (98-112).
After taking Thanksgiving off, 28 teams are in action Friday with only the Mavericks and Raptors idle.
Dallas Mavericks
Nick Nurse is known as a defensive savant, so much so that superstars frequently comment about his schemes expecting to have the kitchen sink thrown at them.
Case in point, on Wednesday, despite missing seven rotational players including three starters Kevin Durant was held to his fewest field goal attempts (10) and points (12) of the season.
Similarly, Trae Young also struggled with his fewest field goal attempts/makes/points (3-13 for14 points) with a season-high 10 turnovers.
But Luka Doncic may be Nurse’s nemesis – – he simply hasn’t figured out a way to limit the Mavericks superstar who averages 27.6 points, 10 rebounds, and 8.3 assists versus the Raptors all-time. At least Nurse can console himself that nine other teams fare even worse.
Dallas struggles offensively, averaging 109.2 points per game (24th) shooting 46.5% from the field (18th), and 34.4% from deep (20th).
In contrast, the defensive end is where the Mavs shine, holding opponents to the lowest points — 106.5 per game and rank in the middle of the pack for efficiency with foes shooting 47.5% from the field (22nd) and 36.8% from the perimeter (23rd).
Maxi Kleber (back) is questionable for Saturday.
Toronto Raptors
While the standings indicate greater parity than ever, it’s worth looking more closely at some factors for why certain teams are seeded higher than expected and vice versa.
Two standouts from the first quarter are how drastic the schedule segments skew and an overabundance of injuries.
Toronto for example has played more road matches, with two baseball sets, three back-to-back sets, plus a home and home set, and just got their first rest advantage (Nets) but were missing seven rotational players.
In fact, while their peers are facing teams minus multiple stars, the Raptors played the Nets (x2), 76ers (x2), and Heat (x3) with Embiid and Adebayo missing one game each and everyone else playing. Notably, the Nets just played the Grizz, 76ers, and Raps all without their top three players.
On offense, the Raptors score 111.7 points per game (15th) shooting 44.5% from the field (26th) and 33.1% from deep (26th).
Defensively, the Raptors allow 110.1 opponent points per game ranking (10th) while they shoot 48.4% (27th) from the field and 36.3% from deep (20th).
Fred VanVleet (illness), and Dalano Banton (ankle) are questionable for Saturday. Scottie Barnes (knee), Otto Porter Jr. (toe), Justin Champagnie (back) Pascal Siakam (groin), and Precious Achiuwa (ankle) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Mavericks are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games.
- The Raptors are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games.
- The Raptors are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games at home.
- The Mavericks are 1-8 SU in their last 9 games on the road.
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Nurse has used nine different starting lineups and in some cases barely had the eight-player minimum required. The schedule dynamics will balance out but for the first time in my recollection, you can’t simply look at win/loss or key stats and feel confident about tier placement.
In fact, I’d caution against taking the Raptors, 76ers, and Heat stats with a grain of salt until they have at least three or four of their core contributors on the court.
Much will depend on who is available for Toronto (and how rusty the returnees are) but the Mavericks are 1-5 on the road which is another key factor.
I’m torn between injuries and road capabilities — and would have more confidence if both FVV and Barnes were back. Still, I like the Raptors to come out swinging if they have their captain back.
