On Thursday, December 1st, the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons play for the first time in this campaign. Dallas will host the second meeting on January 30th.
Both teams last played Tuesday with vastly different results. Dallas arrives in Detroit riding the high of a huge 116-113 victory over the Warriors in what was arguably the game of the season. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Pistons were embarrassed losing by 30 points to the Knicks (110-140).
Last season, the teams played twice with the Mavericks sweeping those contests and hold a current five-game win streak versus Detroit. The Pistons hold the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 42 of their 81 matches
Dallas Mavericks
What a game on Tuesday night! Luka Doncic and Steph Curry put on a show but it was clear the Mavericks superstar lifted his energy to a playoff level and confirmed as much post game.
There was desperation to end the four-game losing streak especially with half the Mavs matches on the road in the next 20 games and their abysmal road record (1-7).
Fortunately, of those 10 upcoming road matches four are against tanking clubs — this one, the Spurs and Rockets twice (albeit the Mavs already lost once to Houston). Plus they’ll face the Wolves twice who’ll be without Karl-Anthony Towns for up to six weeks.
Dallas will also be integrating new team member Kemba Walker who presumably was added to offer another ball handler and 3-point shooter. Or to put it bluntly – – to offer Luka some help.
The Mavericks score 109.4 points per game ranking 25th overall while shooting 46.7% from the field and 34.4% from the perimeter ranking 16th and 20th respectively.
On defense, the Mavs rank fourth for opponent scoring allowing 107.6 points per game with foes shooting 47.7% from the field and 36.3% from the perimeter ranking 24th and 20th respecively.
Two-Way contracted players Tyler Dorsey and McKinley Wright IV are on G-League assignment.
Detroit Pistons
The 140 points given up to the Knicks played some havoc with the Pistons stats dropping them four spots for opponent scoring with their new average being 117.7 points per game.
They also dropped two spots for opponent field goal percentage to 27th allowing foes to shoot an average of 48.6% and likewise dropped two spots on perimeter efficiency from seventh to ninth with opponents averaging 34,5% from deep.
Offensively, the Pistons score 109.1 points per game (27th). From an efficiency perspective, the Pistons shoot the second worst of the 30 teams with 44.3% from the field and rank 24th from the perimeter shooting 33.2%.
Marvin Bagley (knee), Bojan Bogdanovic (knee) and Isaiah Stewart (toe) are all available while Jaden Ivey (knee) is questionable for Thursday. Cade Cunningham (shin) is out until early December.
Buddy Boeheim and Braxton Key are on G-League assignment.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Mavericks are 2-12 ATS in their last 14 games.
- The Pistons are 6-3 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Mavericks are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against Detroit.
- Dallas are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games on the road.
- The Pistons are 1-5 SU in their last 6 games at home.
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Prediction:
The Mavericks haven’t been a great ATS pick for bettors with a 5-14-1 record this season. Detroit is more reliable registering a 10-11-2 record ATS through 23 matches.
And while it seems logical the Mavericks will be motivated to improve their road record, similarly the Pistons will want to shed the stink from that embarrassing loss to the Knicks.
The problem is the Pistons rarely show up to defend and when they do it seldom lasts the full 48 minutes so I’m leaning toward the Mavs winning and covering.
