Sunday, December 4th, the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks play in the second of four meetings this season. New York will host again on January 24th while Cleveland will host the final contest on March 31st. The Cavs won the initial October 30th meeting 121-108.
The Cavaliers last played Friday capturing an easy 107-96 victory versus the Magic while the Knicks are completing a back-to-back set having lost 100-121 to the Mavericks on Saturday.
All time the Knicks have the advantage of winning 116 of the 220 matches versus the Cavaliers. Last season, the teams played three times with the Cavaliers sweeping those three contests.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The young Cavs started drinking their own Kool-Aid which led to the inevitable losing streak (five games) and their coach calling them out for being a little too full of themselves.
Fortunately, J.B. Bickerstaff has the room and his charges ears as that message served to humble the youngsters and get them refocused to play both sides of the court.
Another notable is the roster figured out pretty quickly how vulnerable they become when Jarrett Allen isn’t available which probably helped Bickerstaff push his defensive intensity message.
Offensively, Cleveland scores 112.9 points per game ranking 15th while shooting 48.0% from the field and 38.5% and the perimeter ranking eighth and third respectively.
Cleveland allows opponents to score an average of 106.0 points per game which is the best mark in the association. The Cavs limit foes to 45.5% from the field and 36.1% from deep which ranks 21st and seventh respectively.
Jarrett Allen (back) was downgraded to out Sunday as is Dean Wade (shoulder). Dylan Windler (ankle) and Ricky Rubio (knee) are out indefinitely.
New York Knicks
Although their record is below .500 the Knicks have shown tenacity lately. They lost to each of the Blazers, Grizzlies, and Bucks but none by blow-outs with each contest they demonstrated grittiness.
I’ve gained more respect for the Knicks in these losses than I had prior although they still need to add a piece or two to take another step at least they’re starting to show growth.
Unfortunately, they still tease of falling back into bad habits as they did in their loss to the Mavericks when they got up by 15 points and then surrendered a 41-point (to 15) third quarter.
Offensively, the Knicks score 115.2 points per game (10th). New York shoots 45.6% from the field ranking 24th and 31.8% from the perimeter plummeting them to the basement with the 30th rank.
Defensively, the Knicks allow opponents to score 116.2 points per game (24th). New York allows their opponents to shoot 45.7% from the field and 35.3% from the perimeter ranking seventh and 12th respectively.
Ryan Arcidiacono (ankle) is questionable for Sunday.
