Wednesday, November 16th finds the Cleveland Cavaliers facing the Milwaukee Bucks for the first of four scheduled meetings this season. Milwaukee will host again on November 25th while Cleveland will host on December 21st and January 21st.
Cleveland last played Sunday in a 124-129 loss to the Wolves while the Bucks played Monday losing 106-121 to the Hawks.
Last season the clubs played four times with the Cavaliers winning three of the four contests. The Bucks hold the all-time record with 128 wins in 225 matches versus Cleveland.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Remember when I warned everyone about jumping on the Cavaliers championship bandwagon too early?
Yeah – so they’ve lost four games in a row (Clippers, Kings, Warriors, Wolves) and were only shorthanded versus Minny (Jarrett Allen and Donovan Mitchell were out).
Something that stood out in this losing streak was opponent scoring. Cleveland had only allowed two teams to score 110 or more prior to the streak and both instances occurred in overtime games.
Conversely, during the losing streak, only the Warriors (106) scored less than 110 points and in the other three matches, they allowed an average of 125 points.
This stretch hasn’t hurt them much offensively as they still rank ninth in scoring with 116 points per game as well as field goal percentage shooting 47.4%. and they remain one of the hottest perimeter teams shooting 39.9% (2nd).
Defense is another story because they did rank in the top 10 in the same three categories prior to the losing streak but only are in that area for opponent scoring holding teams to 109.9 points per game (8th).
But they’ve plummeted in opponent efficiency allowing their foes to shoot 46.6% from the field and 37.3% from the perimeter ranking 17th and 22nd respectively.
Donovan Mitchell (ankle) is questionable, Dean Wade (knee) was downgraded to doubtful, while Jarrett Allen (ankle), and Dylan Windler (ankle) were downgraded to out Wednesday. Ricky Rubio (knee) is out indefinitely.
Milwaukee Bucks
The big news is Pat Connaughton (calf) was upgraded to questionable for this game which means he could be making his season debut, and if not, clearly he’s close.
His return would provide a boost to scoring and particularly 3-point shooting. That’s important because the Bucks rank 17th in scoring (111.5 points per game), are second worst in field goal percentage shooting (43.9%) and 23rd on perimeter percentage (33.7%).
The fact the Bucks are winning in spite of performing so poorly offensively is a testament to their defense. They rank third for opponent scoring allowing 107 points per game and are the best at limiting opponents from the field where foes shoot 44%.
During Budenholzer’s tenure, the Bucks’ defensive focus was stopping teams in transition and closing the paint which meant opponents got plenty of wide-open looks from behind the arc.
This season they are making a concerted effort to improve their perimeter defense and are recognizing results as they limit opponents to 34.6% (tied with the Magic in eighth).
Jrue Holiday (ankle) and AJ Green (nose) are questionable, Matthews (hamstring) was downgraded to out, and Allen (ankle) is doubtful for Wednesday. Khris Middleton (wrist), and Joe Ingles (knee) are out indefinitely.

Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction
The Bucks’ defense is a testament to why being strong on that side of the court is so important for title runs.
Milwaukee and Boston have separated themselves from the rest of the East and have an interesting commonality as they each are lagging on one side of the court.
The Celtics await Robert Williams’ return which will immediately impact their defense while the Bucks have 36 points and 5.8 triples sitting on the bench (Middleton and Connaughton).
The difference in this game might come down to injuries so if only one of Holiday or Mitchell is back it gives their team the edge. Although the absence of Allen will hurt Cleveland and I mean it’ll be a LONG night for Mobley trying to limit Antetokounmpo.
Note: if Mitchell plays and Holiday is out you should out consider switching — personally I still think the Bucks win regardless, but the score might be closer then.
