Friday, November 11th, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors meet for the first time this season. Cleveland will host the second contest on January 20th.
The Cavaliers lost 120-127 to the Kings on Wednesday marking the first time this season they’ve lost consecutive games. Golden State has the major rest advantage having last played on Monday in a winning 116-113 effort versus the Kings.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Warriors taking both contests and holding a ten-game winning streak versus the Cavs dating back to January 16th, 2017. The Warriors have won 66 of the 118 matches played between the clubs all-time.
Cleveland Cavaliers
In the previous preview, I warned perhaps everyone was jumping on the Cavs title contender bandwagon a little too quickly. This is definitely one of the better teams in the league but their easy opening schedule hid some of their weaknesses.
Although they beat the Celtics twice, both instances required overtime and their only other contests against winning teams resulted in losses (Raptors, Clippers).
As they complete the first quarter of the season they’ll play five sub-500 teams and four teams with winning records.
This schedule segment should offer a better idea of where the Cavs are in the grand scheme of things as they’ll face the Bucks twice plus some of the sub-500 teams are better than their records like the Warriors, and Heat (possibly the Wolves).
Defensively, the Cavaliers allow 107.4 points per game which rank seventh. Cleveland’s opponents shoot 45.6 percent from the field (9th) and 36.0 percent from the perimeter which is tied for 20th with the Suns.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Cavs are flourishing shooting 40.1% from deep which ranks second, and also second in field goal percentage 48.3% while scoring 116.6 points per game ranking ninth.
Dylan Windler (ankle) and Ricky Rubio (knee) are out.
Golden State Warriors
The start of this season hasn’t gone according to plan for the Warriors who have yet to win a game on the road and are struggling to rediscover the defense that propelled them to the 2022 title.
The goal was to increase the playing time and experience of youngsters Jordan Poole, Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman, and Moses Moody.
The problem is that transition has been anything but smooth and the team is realizing just how vital Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II were last season as they not only accepted but excelled in their roles.
Each brought immediate defensive intensity when they subbed in with Porter offering perimeter shooting. Perhaps most importantly, they were familiar with the system and there was never any panic.
The big question is how long Steve Kerr can wait to allow for that development and for the young guys to learn from their mistakes. Moving forward it’s likely he’ll elect to tweak the rotations and keep two of the veteran core on the floor at all times to ease with the learning cycle.
Diving into the numbers we find the Warriors excelling on offense scoring 117.3 points per game which ranks fourth overall. The Dubs shoot 47.5% from the field tying them with the Wolves in ninth and rank 15th shooting 35.9% from the perimeter.
Warriors opponents are scoring the second most (120.6) per game and shooting 47% from the field and 35.8% from the perimeter which ranks 20th and 17th.
Andre Iguodala (hip) was downgraded to out Friday while Donte DiVincenzo (hamstring) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Warriors are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Cleveland is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Golden State’s last 6 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Cleveland’s last 7 games.
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
An intriguing matchup because of the Cavs frontcourt size and desire to stop their mini-losing streak but the Warriors are well-rested and probably spent extra film sessions this week deciphering everything going wrong on the defensive end of the floor.
While the Dubs aren’t panicking and feel comfortable playing out of any spot in the postseason, by the same token they know better than to let the losing get too out of hand.
Sure, Kerr doesn’t want to over-extend his core and would prefer to keep them healthy by not playing them extended minutes but they need to bank some wins. The hope would be they can build some momentum and spark the confidence of the youngsters.
As noted above, this Cavs team is good – – I’m just not sure they’re as good as the accolades they’ve been getting so I think the losing streak continues.
