The top two teams in the Eastern Conference will face off this Wednesday as the 1st place in Cleveland Cavaliers travel to Boston to take on the 2nd place Celtics. This could be one of the more meaningful games of the second half of the season, as the Cavs look to increase their lead and the Celtics try to close the gap.
Cleveland has won two of their three game since coming back from the All Star break, including a 102-95 home win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday. This will be the first of a three-game road trip, and a win here would be an ideal start.
Boston has struggled as of late, losing two of their last three games since the break. They lost badly on their own court on Monday, falling 114-98 to the Atlanta Hawks.
Despite their struggles, they are only four games behind the Cavaliers in the East.
After some struggles in January, the Cavs rebounded for most of February and come into this one winning nine of their last 11 games.
Since the All Star break, they have won two of three, but the one loss was a pretty severe beating– a 117-99 drubbing at home by the Chicago Bulls on Saturday.
The Cavs got the win against the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday, but they allowed the pesky Bucks to hang around much longer than they should.
LeBron James was dealing with a strep throat issue in that game but still managed to put up 24 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the victory.
Cleveland comes into this game with the 3rd ranked scoring offense in the league, averaging 111.1 points per game. They rank 14th in assists with 22.5 and are tied for 11th in rebounding with 43.9 per contest.
The Cavs have had problems on defense, allowing an average of 105.9 points per game which is 20th in the NBA.
LeBron leads the way for the Cavs with 25.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game. Kyrie Irving is putting up 24.6 points and dishing six assists a night. Kevin Love is contributing 20 points and 11.1 rebounds per contest.
The Celtics have had opportunities to pull away from the slumping Wizards and the up-and-down Raptors as of late, but they have been unable to keep any significant distance between them. Since the All Star break, they have lost two of three games, one of which came at the hands of Toronto.
Despite all of this, they are still only four games behind Cleveland for 1st place in the Eastern Conference. With a win in this game, they could have a real chance at taking over the number one spot before long.
The Celtics put up an average of 107.9 points per game which gives them the 7th ranked scoring offense in the league. They rank 3rd in assists with 24.9 but 27th in rebounding with only 41.7 per contest.
They have been middle-of-the-pack defensively, allowing 105.7 points per game and ranking 17th.
Isaiah Thomas continues to put up big numbers for Boston, averaging 29.6 points and 6.2 assists a night. Avery Bradley adds 17.4 points and 6.7 rebounds, and Al Horford contributes 14.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Jae Crowder and Marcus Smart are also scoring in double figures.
