Chicago has lost two straight since acquiring Nikola Vucevic from the Magic and their last four overall. The good news for the Bulls is that they’ll get the Suns on 0 days rest.
The bad news for Chicago is that Phoenix has now won three straight and 7 of their last 10 after upending Atlanta 117-110 on Tuesday night. The Suns have climbed all the way up to 2nd in the West.
Chicago Bulls
One big issue for Chicago is that their backcourt may be a bit banged up coming into this game. Zach LaVine’s production has dipped the last two games as he fights through an ankle injury.
LaVine scored just 18 in a loss to the Spurs on Saturday and disappointed with just 12 when Chicago was beaten by Golden State on Monday. Coby White joins him on the injury report with a bad back that has forced him to miss the last two games.
Chicago really can’t afford to be without two top scorers, especially in the backcourt as that is the strength for Phoenix. Vucevic will have to shoulder a lot of the load, and he’s been solid in two games as a Bull.
Vucevic has 21 points and 9 rebounds in each of his two games with Chicago. He showed a better familiarity with Billy Donovan’s system in adding 6 assists on Monday. Phoenix has the 12th best defense vs. opposing C’s however.
Phoenix Suns
Phoenix keeps getting it done, this time in a 7-point win over Atlanta as -5.5 favorites. The Suns were up 16 at one point, but also needed a 4-point play with under :30 left to help cover the number.
Either way, the victory was the 6th in the last seven games for the Suns who are trying to keep pace with Utah for the #1 seed in the West. Games like Wednesday night’s are important for Phoenix as the Jazz have rattled off six straight W’s.
The backcourt combo of Devin Booker and Chris Paul were somewhat quiet vs. the Hawks. Booker did have 21 points, but that’s down from the 35 he had on Sunday to help Phoenix to a 101-97 OT win over Charlotte.
Paul had 12 points vs. the Hawks, but also added 8 assists. Perhaps more importantly though Paul played sparkling defense in holding Atlanta’s Trae Young to only 19 points. That defense will be critical against LaVine if he does play.
