The Oklahoma City Thunder seek regular-season dominance vs. the visiting Chicago Bulls Wednesday.
When these interconference rivals met Oct 28, reigning MVP Russell Westbrook completed his leaguewide triple-double tour as the Thunder overwhelmed Chicago, 101-69.
Westbrook has now triple-doubled against all 29 opposing NBA franchises. However, following a tenuous start, questions abound regarding Thunder basketball. Though, opposite 2-9 Chicago, those questions will likely remain unanswered.
Sporting a flotsam roster, the Bulls are clearly playing for future stakes while frustrations mount. To wit, Chicago faces an uphill battle to overcome its earlier 32-point loss vs. Westbrook and company. During that lopsided affair, Chicago shot just 22-of-78 (26.2%) amid Oklahoma City’s bench-clearing romp.
Ahead of Wednesday night’s encounter, the Bulls list Justin Holiday (personal) and David Nwaba (ankle) as out. Meanwhile, Nikola Mirotic (face) is listed as day-to-day, and rookie standout Lauri Markkanen (ankle) remains banged-up but states he will compete against the Thunder.
Oklahoma City reports Steven Adams (calf) as doubtful for Wednesday’s meeting and lists Carmelo Anthony (sore back) as questionable.
The fallout from Chicago’s summer re-structure hasn’t been for the faint of heart. While the Bulls slough through arid competitive sands, though, subtle reasons for optimism have emerged.
The top potential star in Chicago’s nebula cluster is undoubtedly Lauri Markkanen. The towering rookie averages 14.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg, and shoots 43/35/82 overall. Markkanen led the Bulls with 15 points in the team’s Oct meeting vs. OKC. However, when returning to current prospects, one sees Chicago ranked as the NBA’s worst offensive unit, encumbered by a flat -12.4 NetRtg.
The Bulls have lost four of five, recently dropping a visceral 133-94 defeat in San Antonio as eight Spurs added 13-plus points. Further, SAS shot 60/66/81% Saturday against a non-existent Bulls defense. Conversely, Chicago floundered from deep (6-of-23) during a performance best consigned to oblivion.
Even if Adams and Carmelo are unavailable, Fred Hoiberg’s offensively-challenged crew should find points scarce versus the NBA’s #2 defense.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The ‘OKC3’ era hasn’t begun as planned. Reasons for this are myriad; however, the most glaring is a lack of sustained offense (103.9 ppg, 19th NBA). The previous numeric is not what GM Sam Presti envisioned when he emptied his luxury-tax coffers this summer to acquire Paul George and Carmelo Anthony.
And though George, Westbrook, and Anthony combine to score a near evenly-dispersed 64 ppg, teams are limiting OKC’s reserve attack. During a recent four-game slide, the Thunder averaged just 93.2 ppg –opponents have effectively schemed against the obvious while blitzing Oklahoma City’s unbalanced roster.
Even so, the Thunder has won two consecutive versus Dallas and the Clippers. Common logic dictates if Westbrook and George replicate a combined 64-point performance from Saturday’s 112-99 win over Dallas and Patrick Patterson, Raymond Felton, Josh Huestis, and Jerami Grant all net positive contributions vs. Chicago, a season-sweep is in order.
