This will be a welcomed game for the Hornets, who are on a four-game losing streak after going through a tough stretch of games on the road and the last one, at home against a red-hot Toronto team.
Nic Batum went 0-for-10 from the field in the last game against Toronto. He is just in year two of that five-year $120 million contract he signed with the Hornets. Charlotte owes him over $77 million over the next three seasons.
The Hornets owe Dwight Howard over $23 million next season and Marvin Williams just under $30 million combined in the next two seasons.
Those terrible contracts are why Michael Jordan’s hands are essentially tied as far as making moves. He decided to keep Kemba Walker, who is under contract for only next season for a very reasonable $12 million.
The problem is that those bad deals won’t all expire in time for the Hornets to give Walker the max deal he’ll likely be offered elsewhere.
Charlotte really doesn’t have much of a choice but to do what it can in the draft and then see what opportunities become available to move the players it already has under contract.
With those grossly overpaid veterans, Charlotte is better than a lot of the teams that are yet to establish themselves, which means the Hornets won’t get a blue-chip draft position this summer.
The entire situation is terrible for Charlotte but it doesn’t have anybody to blame but itself.
The Magic are already regretting trading Elfrid Payton to the Phoenix Suns for a second round draft pick on the final day of the trade deadline.
Payton has flashed the brilliance that made him a lottery pick a few years ago out of Louisiana-Lafayette. Payton’s two games since being traded, combined: 19-of-31 for 48 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists.
Now, clearly the change of scenery has activated something inside of Payton. This is now to say he would have been performing this way had the Magic kept him, nor that it is a guarantee he will continue to perform as he has in his first two games with his new team.
But it it potentially the next example of the Magic trading away a player who goes on to become a productive member of another team. This doesn’t have as much to do with talent evaluation as it does with talent development.
The Magic lost its second game in a row after a three-game winning streak in the final minute. A turnover and Zach LaVine dunk in the final minute gave the Bulls a detrimental win toward their own tanking ventures.
Orlando gets eight days off after this one before it can finally get down to business on finishing out yet another miserable season of NBA basketball.
