The Hornets lost again over the weekend to the Lakers at home. Michael Jordan met with his players before the game to hear them out and discuss any problems they are having. Airing out those grievances didn’t seem to have any sort of short-term effect.
Charlotte continues to free-fall, once thought of as a middle-level playoff team in the Eastern Conference, the attention of the Hornets’ fan base has already shifted toward the prospects in next year’s NBA Draft.
Aside from inexperienced and poor play on the floor, Head Coach Steve Cliffords’ health concern has complicated matters. He missed his third game in a row in the loss to the Lakers with what is still an undisclosed matter.
The struggles have also prompted speculation that Kemba Walker could be on the trade block. He’s playing tremendous basketball, like he has for the last few years and the Hornets are going nowhere anytime soon. Lots of fans are calling for the front office to get what they can for him now and free a man who has gone through so much suffering since the days of the Bobcats.
Charlotte is 1–10 on the road and that record is likely to only get worse with this game on Monday and a trip to Houston Wednesday.
The Thunder has won four out of its last five but if there’s been a team in the Western Conference as disappointing as the Hornets in the East, this is it.
It’s hard to watch this team offensively, knowing the capabilities it would have with a little movement off the ball. Russell Westbrook will simply stand around or drift toward the half court logo more often than not after initiating the offense with a pass to the wing. I doubt Billy Donovan will get him to change.
OKC got to watch their former guard Victor Oladipo score 47 points last night against the Nuggets. Meanwhile, Paul George, the guy he was traded for, is banged up. George says he will play in this game, however.
OKC is easy to defend but the Hornets aren’t likely to make it look that way. The Thunder should be able to take advantage of individual one-on-ones because the Hornets don’t play any better team basketball at at the moment. Overall, this should be a low-level game, which is a shame considering the talent on the court.
