Saturday, November 12th, finds the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat finishing the baseball set that began on Thursday and required overtime with the Heat winning 117-112. The Hornets will host the other two scheduled matches on January 29th and February 25th.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Heat sweeping the regular season series. The Heat holds the all-time record having bested the Hornets in 72 of their 118 matches.
Charlotte Hornets
With the Heat seemingly on their way to an easy victory, the Hornets refused to raise the white flag delivering a 31-19 fourth quarter which forced the overtime period.
Unfortunately, the Hornets used up all their energy catching Miami and had nothing left in the overtime frame losing the frame and the match by five points (8-13).
Kelly Oubre Jr and Terry Rozier led the way scoring 29 and 22 points respectively but Steve Clifford could’ve used LaMelo Ball and Gordon Hayward who both remained sidelined.
The Hornets are scoring 108.2 ranking 26th league-wide. From an efficiency standpoint, they shoot 44.1 percent from the field (tied 28th) and 33.1 percent from the perimeter ranking 24th.
Defensively, Charlotte is giving up an average of 113.4 points on average which ranks 16th.
Steve Clifford has his squad making slight improvements as the season has progressed as they hold opponents to 46.2 percent from the field ranking 14th but do a commendable job on the perimeter holding opponents to 32.4 percent which ranks third.
The injury update doesn’t offer any reason for celebration as LaMelo Ball (ankle), Gordon Hayward (shoulder), and Cody Martin (quad) all remain out and Dennis Smith Jr. (ankle) is questionable.
Miami Heat
Jimmy Butler (35 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists) and Bam Adebayo (18 points, 14 rebounds) both delivered a double-double in the victory with six Heat players registering double-figure scores. Defense has always been Spo’s calling card but other than holding opponents to 109.4 points per game which ranks 10th they’re well below where they’d expect to be.
Opponent shooting percentages for example demonstrate how far they’re behind. This season Heat opponents are shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 37.9% from the perimeter which ranks 23rd and 26th respectively.
As I noted in the last preview, that’s a significant drop off given the Heat ranked second and fourth in those categories last season.
Offensively, Miami is scoring 108.8 points (24th) points per game while shooting 44.9% from the field (tied with Raptors for 24th) and 33.8% from the perimeter (21st).
Victor Oladipo was downgraded to out while Tyler Herro (ankle) and Dewayne Dedmon (foot) are questionable for Saturday. Omer Yurseven (ankle) is out.

Free Charlotte Hornets vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
Typically these baseball sets are getting split with each side winning once but for teams that are tanking or in the case of the Hornets dealing with copious injuries it’s not a given they’ll bounce back to even the set.
Butler is the type of player who smells blood in the water so he’ll be trying to lead his squad to the sweep and my guess is he succeeds but I doubt they cover the very rich 10.5 spread.
