Thursday, November 10th, finds the Charlotte Hornets facing the Miami Heat for the first of four scheduled meetings between the Southeast Division rivals. Miami is hosting this initial baseball set with the next match on Saturday (November 12th).
The Hornets will host their two matches on January 29th and February 25th.
The Hornets arrive to complete a back-to-back set having lost 95-105 to the Blazers on Wednesday while Miami last played Monday in a tense battle they lost 107-110 to the Blazers.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Heat sweeping the regular season series. The Heat holds the all-time record having bested the Hornets in 71 of their 117 matches.
Charlotte Hornets
Injuries have been the biggest constant for Steve Clifford’s club through the early season. LaMelo Ball injured his ankle in the preseason leaving him sidelined through the initial 12 games.
The fact he’s reached a point to be getting downgraded prior to a game after initially being questionable is a positive sign.
Clifford has dealt with the loss of his best defender Cody Martin virtually the entire season, Gordon Hayward is currently out having missed the last four while Terry Rozier missed seven games returning against Brooklyn.
That’s a huge portion of the core and because they haven’t had them all on the court yet it’s hard to assess precisely where they fit into the grand scheme of the East.
Terry Rozier leads Charlotte in scoring and assists with 22.8 points and 6.3 assists per game. Dennis Smith Jr. is rejuvenated in his new role but you have to wonder how he’ll fit when Ball and Hayward both return.
Then there is the Miles Bridges situation. He pled no contest to a felony domestic violence charge with the deal resulting in no jail time but include three years of probation plus several stipulations (domestic violence counseling, parenting classes, and drug testing).
His status with Charlotte remains unresolved.
The Hornets are scoring 109.1 ranking 23rd league-wide. From an efficiency standpoint, they shoot 44.2 percent from the field and 33.9 percent from the perimeter ranking 27th and 23rd respectively.
Defensively, Charlotte is giving up an average of 113.8 points on average which ranks 16th.
Steve Clifford has his squad making slight improvements as the season has progressed as they hold opponents to 45.9 percent from the field and 32.9 percent from the perimeter ranking 11th and fourth.
Gordon Hayward (shoulder), Cody Martin (quad), and LaMelo Ball (ankle) are all out Thursday.
Miami Heat
The veteran core of Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry, and Bam Adebayo are trying to integrate two young starters into the rotation with Tyler Herro making the leap from the bench as well as Caleb Martin.
While the team hasn’t found a rhythm on either end yet that vet trio is leading the way in points, assists, and rebounds. Specifically, Butler is averaging 21.5 points, Lowry 5.9 assists, and Adebayo 8.2 rebounds per game.
Yet, they arrive at this match with a 4-7 record and searching for their chemistry. It’s still too early to hit the panic button but this group is savvy enough to know they need to correct their course prior to hitting the 20-game/quarter-season mark.
Defense has always been Spo’s calling card but other than holding opponents to 109.2 points per game which ranks ninth they’re below where they’d expect to be.
Opponent shooting percentages for example demonstrate how far they’re behind. This season Heat opponents are shooting 47.1 percent from the field and 38.1% from the perimeter which ranks 18th and 25th respectively.
Last year they ranked second and fourth in those specific areas so while they exercise patience in integrating Martin and Herro, they’ll also be using last season as a benchmark and target.
Offensively, Miami is scoring 108.0 points (27th) points per game while shooting 45.0% from the field (24th) and 34.4% from the perimeter (20th). Uh – yeah, not great for the team who finished first in the East last season.
There seems to be more going on here than just the loss of PJ Tucker. Herro for example, got the bag and moved into the starting rotation but is scoring less instead of more and I’ve noticed teams isolate on him in their matchups.
There is also the assumption Herro (and Martin) will be on a limited timeframe to make it work prior to Spo taping Max Strus or Gabe Vincent to start instead. Slowing this process is the fact Herro is nursing an injury.
As an aside, Victor Oladipo is nearing a return and that could change the dynamics on the court too (he was downgraded to out Thursday). Herro (ankle) and Martin (quad) are questionable for Thursday. Omer Yurseven (ankle) is out.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Charlotte Hornets vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
While the Southeast foes typically have heated battles this is a game the Heat needs to win especially with the Hornets so shorthanded.
The spread is perhaps a bit too rich and this Hornets club is unpredictable so I’ll take the Heat to win but Charlotte to keep it closer than 10.5.
