On Thursday, November 17th, the Brooklyn Nets, and Portland Trail Blazers play the first of two meetings this season. Brooklyn will host the second match on November 27th.
Both teams last played Tuesday with the Nets getting absolutely annihilated 121-153 by the Kings while Portland defeated the Spurs 117-110.
Last season, the teams played twice splitting the series. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Nets in 67 of their 94 matches.
Brooklyn Nets
Until teams have played 20 games it’s very difficult to gauge their strengths, weaknesses, and identity. For the most part, it takes at least that many games to face similar competition in order to have comparable stats.
Case in point, the majority of teams have played 13 or 15 games but within that segment, Miami had played just four road games while Denver had played only four home games, the Raptors had completed three baseball sets while other teams haven’t played any, etc.
In the case of the Nets, the schedule and strength of opponent were of those smaller sample situations where it paid to be careful about jumping too quickly into buying into the hype about a suddenly improved defense.
It was unfathomable, the Nets would go from being the worst defensive team through their first six games into the best defensive team for their next six games.
A closer dive into the details showed the five teams the Nets held under 100 points featured three bottom-five scoring teams (plus 20th, and 12th).
No one could’ve predicted the Kings dropping 153 points on Brooklyn – but by the same token, it was reasonable to assume Sacramento would perform well (I had them winning easily) given they ranked second in scoring.
How Brooklyn responds to the Kings’ shellacking will be telling especially with their upcoming schedule segment. They return home to host the Grizzlies then are right back on the road facing the 76ers, Raptors, and Pacers who are all over .500.
Kyrie Irving (suspension) and T.J. Warren (foot) are out.
Portland Trail Blazers
Similar to my point above about needing 20 wins these Blazers weren’t expected to be sitting atop the Western Conference. Dissecting Portland’s schedule they’ve been on the road (6-2) more than at home (4-2) and played three back-to-back sets already.
Unlike the teams who’ve had a steady diet of the lower tier teams five of the Blazers’ wins are against winning teams (and Miami at .500 as of this writing).
And not just ‘winning records’ but teams in the upper echelon like the Nuggets and the Suns (twice).
While the Nets have vacillated back and forth and experienced success primarily against the lower tier, the Blazers have demonstrated more consistency against tougher competition.
Another sign the Blazers are closer to who they’ve shown themselves to be through 14 games is they feature three 20+ scorers.
Damian Lilliard was expected but Anfernee Simons carried over his success from last season and Jerami Grant has seamlessly integrated with his new team. Grant, arguably is among the main reasons why the Blazers’ defense is vastly improved this season.
Jusuf Nurkic (quad), Justise Winslow (ankle), and Keon Johnson (hip) are questionable while Gary Payton II (conditioning) and Olivier Sarr (wrist) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Blazers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Brooklyn’s last 9 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 13 of Portland’s last 19 games.
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
The Blazers have performed well against the spread with an 11-3 record this season and are simply the more reliable, consistent club. Frankly, I’m shocked the spread for Portland is so low.
