The Nets lost to the Spurs on Tuesday night but San Antonio played its game and beat the Nets, who are no longer a team that just gets steamrolled.
LaMarcus Aldridge was a tough guard inside and Kawhi Leonard played the biggest role he’s had since making his delayed season debut. Those are just better players that what Brooklyn can offer.
If De’Angelo Russell comes back to be the Nets’ starting point guard, Spencer Dinwiddie is at the very least getting a good opportunity to prove that he can be a proficient NBA point guard.
Dinwiddie is part of the rare collection of professional athletes to have suffered a career-threatening knee injury only to come back and excel at a level equal to or higher than where they were before.
The former Colorado Buffalo tore his knee up in his junior year. That would be the end of his college career but the Pistons picked him up in the second round on a flier.
Turns out he belongs in this league. He’s set three different career-highs for points in a game this season with Brooklyn: 22, then 25 and 26. He set his career-high with a dozen assists two weeks back, too. When Russell does come back, the Nets are going to have some depth to play with at the guard position.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans swept through Florida with wins in Miami and Orlando. No tough task these days.
The offense continues to operate at a high level. The two big guys surrounded by the three guards has yielded some positive offensive efficiency numbers.
But the Pelicans’ defense has been dreadful, as bad as any team’s in the entire NBA. Alvin Gentry blames the offense for the defensive struggles because of all the live-ball turnovers.
DeMarcus Cousins has been the biggest violator. He is averaging over five per game, up nearly 50 percent on his career average, which wasn’t particularly good to begin with.
Cousins will be an unrestricted free agent after this season and it’s hard to imagine the Pelicans stepping up to pay him. They just have an unclear vision of how the team will look in two, three, five years and it feels like they are just gambling a little bit with how they are constructing this team, happy to keep whatever talent it can. That approach won’t end well.

Free Brooklyn Nets vs. New Orleans Pelicans NBA Prediction: Brooklyn may not win, but it’ll cover the big number.
It’s tough to play this game on the road in the second night of the back-to-back. Then again, maybe the Nets’ holiday hangover is a thing of the past. If there’s a team to come out groggy, I suspect it will be the Pelicans. Give me the scrappy Nets with the ten points.
