The Atlanta Hawks will attempt to sweep the Toronto Raptors with a win on Tuesday.
Last season, the squads played three times with Toronto winning all three contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having won 47 matches of the 94 played.
Atlanta Hawks
The fourth-seeded Hawks hold a slim half-game margin over the charging Heat. The Hornets and Celtics are a full game back in the standings while the Knicks are two games back.
Atlanta is on a hot streak having won six of seven and two in a row. Albeit the only team sporting a winning record in those six was their last opponent the Hornets who limped into the match.
The Hawks ended the Hornets season-long trend of winning games they lead entering fourth quarters. Most impressively they did it without Trae Young (calf), Danilo Gallinari (foot), Tony Snell (ankle), John Collins (ankle), Cam Reddish (Achilles), DeAndre Hunter (knee), or Kris Dunn (ankle). The latter four are expected out again Tuesday.
Bogdan Bogdanovic led the way for Atlanta with 32 points and a career-high eight 3-pointers. Clint Capela registered a double-double of 20 points and 15 rebounds prompting coach Nate McMillan to extol on his center’s two-way dominance calling him ‘the glue’ of the club.
Brandon Goodwin (17), Lou Williams (13), and Kevin Huerter (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
Toronto Raptors
Hindsight is 20-20, Toronto lost both Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol as Masai Ujiri opted for flexibility to pursue Giannis Antetounmpo this offseason.
With that option no longer available the Raptors needed to shift gears. Clearly, the move to bring in Gary Trent Jr. for Norman Powell was an upgrade who’ll fit the future core, but the issues at center persisted.
With the addition of Canadian Khem Birch and 10-day contracted Freddy Gillespie Aron Baynes didn’t touch the court on Sunday and both seemed to offer a better fix to Toronto’s rim protection and rebounding woes.
If the franchise refuses to wave the white flag look for Gillespie to signed. The Raptors moved to 1-10 in second games of back-to-backs despite pushing the Knicks to the final buzzer but a double-dribble by Pascal Siakam sealed their fate.
Kyle Lowry returned to play 37 minutes with 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Trent Jr. led with 23 points while Chris Boucher registered a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Siakam continues to battle through post-COVID fatigue producing 16 points and seven assists. The Raptors play four matches in week 17 (Hawks, Bucks, Magic, Thunder) with three very winnable matches.
VanVleet (hip) is day-to-day but still has to serve a one-game suspension. Paul Watson Jr. (protocols) and Jalen Harris (hip) are also questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 8-2 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Raptors are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Hawks are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games
- The total has gone over in 7 of Atlanta’s last 10 games.
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
This week will be the harbinger of what is to come for the Raptors the rest of the season. With two lottery teams and two East seeds on tap.
It’s not the core but the performance of Birch and Gillespie who’ll provide the basis of that decision.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Bet the over
It’s simple — win or tank. I’m banking on the Raptors grit. In the two prior contests the teams averaged a cumulative 247 points.
