The second-round series between the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers began on Sunday with the Hawks stealing home-court advantage via a 128-124 victory in Philly.
Atlanta scored 42 points in the opening frame extending that total to 74 points by the end of the first half while holding Philly to 54 points. Philly bounced back in the second half outscoring Atlanta 70-54.
Joel Embiid did suit up and was effective on offense but struggled to stop Trae Young in pick-and-roll situations.
Atlanta Hawks
Trae Young picked up right where he left off in Round 1 scoring 35 points and dishing 10 assists in Game 1 of the semi-finals. The majority of that production occurred in the first half (25 points, seven assists).
As the game progressed Doc Rivers had Ben Simmons and Matisse Thybulle spend more time defending Young replacing Danny Green who was his primary defender in the first half.
Clint Capela registered a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Youngsters John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic each scored 21 points while Kevin Huerter led the reserve effort for Atlanta with 15 points.
DeAndre Hunter didn’t play in Game 1 and is questionable with right knee soreness for Game 2.
Kris Dunn (non-COVID illness), Brandon Goodwin (respiratory condition), and Cam Reddish (right Achilles) are all out.
Philadelphia 76ers
Much like the Bucks seemed a step slow in their opening match so too did the 76ers but seemingly found their rhythm especially in the final frame.
The question surrounding Joel Embiid’s availability was erased as he started the game and moreover was extremely effective registering 39 points, nine rebounds, four assists, a steal, and three blocks.
Granted he’s lateral movement is hampered by the slight tear of his meniscus but there is more than ample defensive ability on the roster. The big question is whether there is enough consistent offense.
In Game 1, the big man got help from his teammates with Simmons (17 points, 10 assists) and Tobias Harris (23 points, 10 rebounds) both collecting double-doubles.
Seth Curry scored 21 points connecting on five of his nine 3-pointers and Thybulle was excellent providing two-way effort chipping in 10 points.
Embiid is listed as questionable for Game 2, but that’s likely to be the narrative throughout the series given the severity of his injury.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Philly has to start with defensive intensity to ensure Trae Young doesn’t get in a rhythm. The issue is Young is very much like James Harden in his ability to sell refs on fouls when it’s him creating the contact.
Doc’s dilemma is not wanting to start Simmons on Young and risk foul trouble but inserting Thybulle in the starting rotation would put undue stress on Embiid and Harris to carry the offensive load and remove either Seth Curry or Danny Green who are the Sixers floor spacers.
The problem is Philly can’t afford to lose both games at home so this is about as close to a must-win as it gets. However, Atlanta can play free and easy having already collected the split. I’ll take Philly to rebound, BUT— if Embiid can’t go swap that to the Hawks.
