The second-round series between the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers gets underway on Sunday, June 6th in a matinee offering. This season the team played three times with Philly taking two of the three meetings.
In the Hawks win, Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris, and Seth Curry were out while Trae Young missed one game, De’Andre Hunter was out for both losses, and Bogdan Bogdanovic missed all three games versus Philly.
Atlanta Hawks
Although Atlanta enters as the fifth seed they are arguably a better team than their overall 2020-21 record. Injury ravaged the Hawks early in the year but aside from Cam Reddish, the core is essentially fully healthy.
Since Nate McMillan took over as head coach, the Hawks made improvements on both sides of the court amassing a 27-11 record or 71.0 percent win percentage. During the same schedule segment, the 76ers registered an identical 27-11 record!
The depth of the Hawks is a decided advantage but the play of Trae Young is what propelled them to an easy gentleman’s sweep of the Knicks. They’ll be ready for another tough defensive team but unlike the Knicks, the 76ers will pose greater offensive talents.
In Round 1, Young averaged 29.2 points, 9.8 assists taking 22.8 field goal attempts per game while shooting 44.1% from the field and 34.1% from deep.
Clint Capela averaged a double-double of 10 points and 13.4 rebounds plus 2.2 blocks versus New York and was the main defender to shut down Julius Randle. He’ll be facing a tough test if Embiid can play through his injury and a decided advantage if the Sixers big man can’t go.
The NBA injury report suggests Hunter is questionable with right knee soreness.
Philadelphia 76ers
Clearly, the injury to Embiid is the big elephant in the room as Philly was looking primed to sail through to the Conference Finals and await the winner of the Nets – Bucks series.
But with this injury, their path forward is no longer assured even to get out of this round. That said, there are critical matchups that could pose real issues for the Hawks besides Embiid.
There is an immediate height advantage in the backcourt with the 6’11 Ben Simmons and 6’6″ Danny Green versus the 6’6″ Bogdanovic and 6’1″ Young. Throw in the ever-dependable Matisse Thybulle and Philly has at least three solid defenders they can task with limiting Young.
Through round 1, Simmons averaged a near triple-double of 14.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 9.2 assists.
Tobias Harris also averaged a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds and poses a much greater offensive skillset than anything the Hawks faced from the Knicks frontcourt. Defensively he’ll likely draw John Collins as his defensive assignment which is a tougher task than Rui Hachimura.
Prior to his injury, Embiid averaged 29.3 points and 7.0 rebounds needing only 28 minutes per game.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Hawks are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Many analysts believe the Hawks’ depth will lead to an upset particularly if Embiid is out. What makes them intriguing is their defense particularly at stopping teams in transition. The Sixers on the other hand are known for their defense and are better offensively than expected.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: 76ers ATS
Like most series the superstars are the key and while the obvious potential absence of Embiid looms the bigger factor could be how Doc Rivers’ game plans to limit Young.
As I noted in the prior series the Hawks point guard consistently attempts the most shot attempts though he’s equally adept at managing the team and dishing dimes so it might serve the 76ers well to entice him into being the scorer while shutting down everyone else.
