Wednesday, June 16th the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers tip off Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semi-finals with the teams knotted at two games apiece.
After falling behind by double-digits early on Monday in Game 4, the Hawks battled back to erase the deficit and win in dramatic fashion in clutch time. The series is now guaranteed to go at least six games.
Atlanta Hawks
Trae Young has struggled against the length of Ben Simmons and the scrappy defense of Matisse Thybulle. Young was one of three Hawks who managed to register double-doubles in Game 4 alongside teammates Clint Capela and John Collins.
Young collected 25 points and 18 assists but his efficiency was greatly affected by a sore shoulder as he shot 8 of 26 from the field and 3 of 11 from deep. Let that register again — he took 26 shots to collect 25 points with six points coming at the charity stripe!
Capela collected 12 points and 13 rebounds while Collins registered 14 points and 12 rebounds plus was a game-high plus +9. Collins specifically was a key factor with his timely putback dunks that instantly changed the momentum in the match.
Bogdan Bogdanovic didn’t fare much better with his efficiency shooting 9 of 24 en route to amassing 22 points while Kevin Huerter was moved into the starting rotation also reach double-figures scoring with 10 points.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers frittered away a golden opportunity to take over the series by blowing a first-half 18 point lead. The fact Philly lost the match may come back to haunt them since it’s forcing Embiid to play extra minutes on a knee that has a slight tear in his meniscus.
Instead of returning to Philly with an opportunity to end the series and get their big man some much-needed rest, they’ll be forced to play at least six games now and are in jeopardy of losing outright.
To that end, the big man struggled particularly in the second half shooting 0 for 12 although he finished with a double-double of 17 points (4 of 20) and 21 rebounds.
His teammates need to do more and by do more, I specifically mean keep moving the ball and themselves. They built the double-figure lead with that strategy but abandoned it for more isolation plays (or as Doc Rivers called it — hero ball) in the second half which cost them the game.
Tobias Harris (20) and Seth Curry (17) were strong offensively accounting for five 3-pointers. Ben Simmons came close to a triple-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds and nine assists although he continues to struggle from the line (1 of 5).
Furkan Korkmaz as expected got the tap to start in place of the ailing Danny Green (calf) scoring 10 points but I wonder if Rivers will make an adjustment in Game 5 given his game worst minus -13.
