(7-24) Atlanta Hawks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (16-15)
Two nights after beginning the week with a win at home over a short-handed Miami team, the Hawks lost at Phillips Arena to the Indiana Pacers, 105–95.
Victor Oladipo and Myles Turner combined for 43 and the Pacers handled their business against the worst team in the Eastern Conference and all of the NBA, in fact. Bojan Bogdanovic also bounced back with 19 points after throwing the game away against Boston earlier this week.
The Hawks’ two highest scorers started the game on the bench. John Collins scored 18 and Marco Belinelli added 13. Atlanta shot just under 28 percent on its three-pointers, which has been a point of weakness all season.
Atlanta is now 3.5 games clear of Chicago in the Eastern Conference; this is speaking to draft positioning, of course. Atlanta has a two-game lead over Dallas and Sacramento for the most ping-pong balls in next year’s NBA Draft.
OKC earned a one-point win against Denver earlier this week and backed that up with a 28-point thrashing of Utah on Wednesday night. The Jazz was missing both Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, who both sat with injuries.
So the Thunder did what it does against weaker opponents, which is pretty much just bludgeon it right over the head. Russell Westbrook went 10-for-13 and Paul George and Carmelo Anthony both chipped in 18. By the end of the game, Billy Donovan emptied the bench and got 13 guys minutes in total.
Paul George dunked on Derrick Favors in the third quarter in the middle of OKC’s run to put the game away. Some would say that the Thunder looked like it was having fun playing for the first time in a long time. Of course it’s easier when you’re playing an inferior opponent.
But the Hawks are just that. This is an opportunity for OKC to build some confidence. It won’t come by playing the same sort of basketball and imposing its will in isolation. It’s going to have to come with ball movement and body movement. Until Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony commit themselves to play off the ball, that isn’t liable to happen anytime soon.
