Although it’s unfair to place all the blame on Pierce for the 14-20 start given the numerous injuries he navigating. Alternatively, McMillan has amassed a 17-6 record at the helm and recently that’s included victories while missing the similar core players Pierce didn’t have.
What there is no argument about is McMillan has the Hawks humming offensively and making strides defensively. Makes you wonder what Indiana GM Kevin Pritchard is thinking as his Pacers fight to be in the play-in tournament.
Conversely, if we dive deeper into the nine recent wins – the Spurs were playing in a back-to-back and still pushed Atlanta to double overtime. Scanning three other wins highlight the absence of core players:
- Pelicans: without Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, Steven Adams, Lonzo Ball, and Josh Hart in the first game.
- Hornets: without LaMelo Ball, Gordon Hayward, and Malik Monk.
- Raptors: without Kyle Lowry or Fred VanVleet
Moreover, only the Hornets were a top-eight seed and they are a sub .500 team.

Bolstering their defensive effort was a suddenly improved Knicks offense with RJ Barrett coming into his own. He led the way for New York with 24 points connecting on six 3-pointers of his 11 attempts.
Julius Randle delivered a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds with seven assists while Reggie Bullock also scored 16 points.
Derrick Rose and Immanuel Quickley both scored 17 points with Rose dishing five dimes.
The Hornets weren’t happy with the meager eight free throw attempts (Knicks got 12) especially considering they outscored the Knicks 42-26 in the paint proving they were being aggressive and driving the ball.
Alec Burks is questionable while he deals with safety protocols while Mitchell Robinson is out indefinitely with a fractured foot.
