Friday, June 25th, Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks tip-off at 8:30 p.m. The Bucks allowed the Hawks to stick around and it cost them the opener in the series. Expect a more physical, aggressive effort in Game 2.
Atlanta Hawks
In a series where no expert has selected the Hawks to win the young upstarts threw a wrench in the series sweep narrative by stealing Game1. At the heart of the victory was Trae Young and his infamous floater in the paint.
Repeatedly, Young would drive and deliver the floater or use it as a disguise to get Clint Capela or John Collins an easy lob. The effect was palpable as it forced the Bucks to reduce Brook Lopez’s minutes.
Clearly, Nate McMillan saw the same thing as Atlanta began the second half running that play even with Bogdan Bogdanovic and Kevin Huerter using the same shot.
With the shot falling, it opened up the floor for Young who had one of his best postseason performances and most efficient. He finished with 48 points (17 of 34) although his perimeter shot was still off (4 of 13) plus had 11 assists and seven rebounds.
John Collins (23 points, 15 rebounds) and Clint Capela (12 points, 19 rebounds) also collected double-doubles. Kevin Huerter scored 13 points as the only other double-figure contributor.
Milwaukee Bucks
The entire season the focus for Mike Budenholzer was whether he could learn to adapt and more importantly do it during a game not in between matches. Kudos to the Bucks coach for at least recognizing Lopez had to come out with the Hawks feasting on that floater.
Still, one would presume that would’ve been a key area of focus for Milwaukee. Now it becomes the primary focus and his ability to address it will determine whether this is a gentleman’s sweep for Milwaukee or a long series and one where he’ll likely be fired if they don’t succeed.
As for the players Jrue Holiday did as expected facing the smaller and less defensively capable Young and injured Bogdanovic. Holiday collected a double-double of 33 points and 10 assists along with four rebounds, two steals, and a block.
Giannis Antetokounmpo led the way with a near triple-double of 34 points, 12 assists, and nine rebounds plus collected two steals and two blocks. More importantly, his yips at the free-throw line seemed to be quelled as he hit 6 of his 8 attempts.
While there will be added pressure for Game 2, Khris Middleton will surely produce a better effort following his 15 points off 6 of 23 from the field. Middleton was particularly off from deep (0-9) although he did add five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Bobby Portis got more burn as Coach Bud used his small-ball lineup chipping in 11 points.

With Lopez out of the game, it gave the Hawks the edge on the boards (51-45) but that was about the only main category Atlanta won. Both teams struggled from the perimeter but Milwaukee won both the fast break scoring (15 to 10) and points in the paint (70 to 54).
So it all comes down to stopping that Trae Young floater. I’m banking on Milwaukee and Coach Bud making that adjustment.
