Last night was a rather eventful night to get the NBA season going. Now, regularity will slowly begin to set in with nearly a full slate of games on tap tonight.
The Atlanta Hawks visit the Dallas Mavericks in a game between two teams that have recently fallen from contending status.
The Hawks lost Al Horford before last season and took a step back while still maintaining their status as outside contenders and playoff regulars in the Eastern Conference.
This season, the Hawks will be without their other supremely talented big man in Paul Milsap, who is now with the Denver Nuggets. Tim Hardaway also left so the Hawks are officially in rebuild mode.
The best asset left is point guard Dennis Schroeder. His offensive game has developed each season since he came over from Germany as an extremely raw, Rajon Rondo-like point guard with great handles but not much of anything for a jump shot.
He still isn’t great shooter but deserves just enough respect to draw defenders close enough to blow by them with his speed.
He’s an equally great finisher and passer once he draws the second defender that he can generate a lot of production for Atlanta by himself that way.
Kent Bazemore will play with Schroeder in the backcourt and Taurean Prince represents the potential to be the Hawks’ next-best option as a physical wing who still needs to develop his shot.
The Mavs found themselves in the lottery last season and took the athletically talented Dennis Smith Jr. ninth overall out of North Carolina State.
There’s been a lot of Rookie of the Year buzz out of Mavericks’ camp regarding Smith. He will certainly have the keys to the offense with so many of the great offensive players of yours passed now gone.
Wesley Matthews and Harrison Barnes, big free agent acquisitions in the last couple years, remain on the wings but Smith will be the team’s starting point guard. He will look to use an open middle to create lanes for his teammates and finish himself with great leaping ability.
Dirk Nowitzki enters his 20th season. He leads all active players in games played, minutes, field goals made, field goals missed, rebounds, free throws and points.
Nerlens Noel will back him up and likely play a lot alongside of him as a rebounder and rim protector as Nowitzki’s increasing immobility hampers him on the defensive end. He can still get a bucket, though.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
Dennis Schroeder very well may be the best player on the court. This should be a game that lacks offense and will likely be close. I just can’t see either team pulling away from the other.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Atlanta +6
The total is a little low to play the under on but I’ll take the points with the Hawks.
