Monday, November 21st the Atlanta Hawks and the Cleveland Cavaliers play the first of three scheduled contests. Atlanta will host games on February 24th and March 28th.
The Hawks last played Saturday needing overtime to beat a severely shorthanded Raptors squad 124-122 while the Cavaliers enter to finish a back-to-back set having crushed the shorthanded Heat 113-87 on Sunday.
Last season, the teams played four times with the Hawks winning three of the four contests. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Cavaliers in 127 of their 236 matches
Atlanta Hawks
I expected the Hawks to win Saturday and also predicted the Raptors would keep it close despite missing two starters and four contributing reserves.
The good was rookie AJ Griffin who was the best Hawks player on the court in overtime scoring four of the five baskets they made and eight of their 13 points (three were free throws) and the feel-good moment of doing it in front of his Dad – assistant Raptors coach Adrian Griffin.
The bad was how Atlanta was even in an overtime game when the Raptors had only nine players dressed (including two G-Leaguers and three who are typically DNP CDs). Especially after losing by 30 against this squad the last time out.
Never mind Trae Young felt it necessary to punk those four Raptors reserves at game end for a TV moment. It punctuates the point that no elite Eastern team is scared of playing this Hawks squad in the postseason.
Young’s antics immediately summoned J.B. Bickerstaff’s recent ‘fat cat’ comments to his Cavs team reminding them they hadn’t won anything and needed to do the work to EARN those accolades.
Instead of being thirsty and giving the Raptors all the ammunition, they’ll need for their next meeting on January 14th, Young should be ticked his team had to fight to beat a decimated club.
On the season, the Hawks rank ninth in scoring with 115.2 points per game. Atlanta is tied for 19th with the Grizzlies shooting 46.5 percent from the field and ranks 28th on the perimeter shooting 31.9 percent.
Defensively, the Hawks allow opponents to score 114.4 points per game ranking 18th overall. Atlanta allows their opponents to shoot 45.7 percent from the field (9th) and 32.5% from the perimeter (3rd).
Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) is out indefinitely.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Since the Cavaliers are playing a back-to-back I don’t know how they responded to almost losing their sixth straight game and needing double-overtime to break the losing streak. (update: Cavs annihilated the Heat)
Offensively, Cleveland scores 115.9 points per game which ranks eighth while they shoot 47.5 percent from the field (tied with the Suns in ninth) and 39.4 percent from the perimeter ranking second overall.
J.B. Bickerstaff had a reason for spouting about his youngsters’ mindset as they’ve steadily slid down the ladder on the defensive side of the hardwood. While they ranked in the top five for the initial weeks of the season they continue to drop as they face better clubs.
As of this posting (prior to the game Sunday), they rank 10th in opponents scoring allowing 110.1 points per game. Cleveland allows their foes to shoot 46.1 percent from the field tied with the Celtics and Magic in 15th and 37.1 percent from the perimeter tied with the Wolves in 23rd.
Kevin Love (thumb) was listed as doubtful for Sunday but reports are the thumb is fractured so presumably, he’ll be out a while. Dean Wade (knee) was downgraded to out. Dylan Windler (ankle) and Ricky Rubio (knee) are out indefinitely.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
If you’re a frequent reader of my posts then you’ll know I’ve been less than infatuated with the Hawks and spotted the issues in Cleveland before their losing streak hit.
That said, I have much more confidence in the Cavaliers team being a legitimate playoff team who could cause damage in the spring as opposed to my belief the Hawks are more flash than splash.
We’re talking about a team built around a 3-point sniper who is shooting 31.5% from deep and can’t defend a lick. So even with the rest disadvantage, I like the Cavs to take care of business.
