All-Star Saturday Night | (3rd Event)
The NBA Three-Point Contest will feature eight of the best shooters from behind the arc.
One notable omission is Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Stephen Curry, but his teammate Klay Thompson is the odds-on favorite to win the competition.
Below will describe the top five participants and why they have the chance to win this year’s Three-Point Contest.
Klay Thompson 2018 NBA 3 Point Contest Odds +200
Klay Thompson won this competition two years ago and he’s one of the best and most consistent three-point shooters in the world.
What I look for in this competition is pace, technique and some size and Thompson has all three. He’s a solid 6’7″ with strong legs, which is huge for maintaining strength as fatigue sets in.
He also does almost all of his damage in actual games with his feet set, usually catching and shooting from a pass. Compare Thompson’s production to someone like Wayne Ellington, who is often off-balance, or Devin Booker, who does a lot off the dribble, and you can see how Thompson’s in-game shooting resembles what he will do on Saturday night.
There is minimal wasted motion in Thompson’s stroke. It’s like a smooth, compact swing in the home run derby. He won’t fatigue like others will and will probably miss less two. At +200, Thompson offers some value as the favorite.
Eric Gordon 2018 NBA 3 Point Contest Odds +450
Gordon has been in and out of the lineup a bit with some back problems but he’s been playing in the last week or two and will suit up to try and defend his title in this event.
Gordon, like Thompson, has a shot that’s predicated on the legs and little superfluous movement up top. And like Thompson, he has won this competition in the last two years.
It’s tough not like like Gordon at +450 if you like Thompson at +200. I would say each of the top two favorites have some value.
Paul George 2018 NBA 3 Point Contest Odds +650
If there is one guy I really don’t like at the price being offered, it’s Paul George.
George is the fourth favorite at +650 but I would willingly lay -700, even -800, that he doesn’t win this thing.
George can shoot it a little bit but he does a lot more than that. If he were as good a pure shooter as someone like Thompson or Gordon with the other skills he has, we would be talking about him as the best player in the NBA.
The mechanics are a little flawed too. He cocks the ball back and doesn’t always get a consistent jump, which is due in large part to the different ways he scores the ball off the dribble. He is not cut out for this competition.
Wayne Ellington 2018 NBA 3 Point Contest Odds +750
This is a guy who could make some noise as a dark horse with a pretty good payout. Ellington has been amazing from three this year, as Miami fans are quick to point out. He will have a sort of cult following in this competition.
The man Heat fans call “Golden Arm” does a lot of his game damage curling around screens and creating space. Obviously, these looks will be a bit easier.
It could work both ways, maybe he won’t miss because the looks will be so easy. Or perhaps he will be a little thrown off shooting from a stand-still five consecutive times. I wouldn’t risk it.
Bradley Beal 2018 NBA 3 Point Contest Odds +850
This is the guy I think offers the most value. Thompson and Gordon have won their contest already and because of it, the odds are reduced significantly.
Gordon was right around this number when he won’t last year and Beal is a pure shooter who can really get on a roll.
He’s got strong legs, sounds mechanics and the confidence to match. Plus, he hasn’t won it before and is going off at +850. Beal is my pick, considering the odds, but some combination of he, Thompson and Gordon offers a tremendous chance at hitting.
If you were to take a ten unit bankroll and put five on Thompson, two on Gordon and three on Beal, you would net +5 on a Thompson win, +1 with Gordon and 22.5 with Beal. You could obviously balance those numbers to your liking.
