Here’s why I’m backing an OVER bet below in my Cowboys Spartans free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Cowboys vs. Spartans Gameday
The Wyoming Cowboys visit the San Jose State Spartans on Friday, October 9, 2026, for a Mountain West showdown at CEFCU Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 PM ET on CBS Sports Network.
Wyoming enters at 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Cowboys are 0-3 away from Laramie, so another road trip probably isn’t topping their list of favorite activities.
San Jose State is 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain West. The Spartans are 1-1 at home and return to San Jose after winning at Hawaii. It’s also homecoming, giving Ken Niumatalolo’s team another reason to deliver.
Wyoming desperately needs a road breakthrough, while San Jose State would rather not spoil its homecoming party.
Wyoming coach Jay Sawvel is trying to get his team back on track after a difficult trip to Fargo.
The Cowboys won last year’s meeting 35-28 in Laramie, but San Jose State has won four straight home games against Wyoming. That’s an interesting contrast heading into Friday.
It’s Week 6, Wyoming Cowboys vs. San Jose State Spartans, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Wyoming Cowboys vs. San Jose State Spartans Odds & Last 5
San Jose State opened as a -237 moneyline favorite, with Wyoming at +195. The Spartans are laying 6.5 points, and the opening total is 43.5.
Wyoming was shut out 28-0 at North Dakota State last Saturday. The Cowboys managed only 52 passing yards, which is hardly the kind of performance that sends opposing defensive coordinators into a panic.
Wyoming’s victories came against Northern Colorado, 21-13, and Hawaii, 27-10. Those results show the Cowboys can compete when their ground game gets established. They’ve had considerably less success when forced to chase points.
San Jose State defeated Hawaii 20-16 in Honolulu. The Spartans also own victories over Eastern Michigan and Cal Poly, although their losses to USC and Fresno State exposed some defensive weaknesses. Neither team has been particularly dependable from week to week.
The opening number gives San Jose State a clear advantage, but the total deserves attention with these contrasting offensive styles. Bettors can compare the latest prices at their preferred sportsbooks before making a decision.

Spartans Stats
San Jose State has produced 1,278 passing yards and scored 113 points through five games. The Spartans have been productive through the air, although their overall offensive efficiency still has room to improve.
Running back Jabari Bates has rushed for 487 yards on 104 carries. He hasn’t scored a rushing TD, but he’s giving the Spartans dependable production between the tackles. Apparently, somebody else keeps collecting the touchdowns. Freshman receiver Carson Clark has 29 catches for 314 yards and four TD’s.
Defensively, San Jose State has allowed 125 points. The Spartans have created six interceptions, with cornerback Caleb Womack accounting for two of them.
Linebacker Dylan Lee leads the team with 44 tackles. Defensive lineman Jeremiah Tuiileila has added 2.5 sacks, giving San Jose State another playmaker up front. The defense can create trouble, but it hasn’t consistently kept opponents off the scoreboard.
Cowboys Stats
Wyoming has scored 71 points through five games, averaging 14 per contest. The Cowboys have gained 715 passing yards and 767 rushing yards, with the ground game providing their most dependable production.
Samuel Harris has rushed for 257 yards and two TD’s. Markell Holman has contributed 248 yards and three scores, giving Wyoming a useful one-two combination in the backfield.
The Cowboys have struggled to turn that rushing production into consistent scoring. Their offensive line has also faced growing pains, making sustained possessions difficult against stronger opponents. There’s only so much a running back can accomplish when defenders arrive before the handoff is finished.
Wyoming has two capable running backs, but its offense still has plenty of unfinished business.
Defensively, Wyoming has surrendered 110 points this season.
The Cowboys recorded seven tackles for loss against North Dakota State, matching their season high. That kind of disruption can help Sawvel’s defense get off the field, although the unit still needs better support from the offense.
Cowboys vs. Spartans QB Matchup
San Jose State QB Luke Weaver has completed 106 of 171 passes for 1,278 yards, 11 TD’s and five interceptions. His passing production ranks among the Mountain West’s best.
Weaver completed 19 of 28 passes for 246 yards and two TD’s against Hawaii. He’s thrown multiple TD passes in four of five games, giving the Spartans a reliable way to attack downfield. The occasional interception remains something to watch.
Wyoming QB Tyler Hughes has completed 66 of 112 passes for 708 yards, two TD’s and six interceptions.
The William & Mary transfer has experienced a difficult transition to the FBS level. His passing numbers reflect an offense that hasn’t consistently created comfortable throwing situations.
Hughes showed improvement against Hawaii, completing 17 of 23 passes for 204 yards. Unfortunately for Wyoming, that progress didn’t carry over into its next outing. Consistency remains the missing ingredient.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Weaver gives San Jose State more established passing production, while Hughes has shown he can contribute when Wyoming protects him and keeps the offense balanced.
Neither QB can afford careless decisions against defenses capable of producing takeaways. The challenge for Wyoming is keeping Hughes in manageable situations, while San Jose State will want Weaver making quick reads rather than forcing throws.
Wyoming Cowboys vs. San Jose State Spartans bottom line: San Jose State’s established passing attack faces a Wyoming team trying to build around its running game and find more dependable QB play.

Cowboys Spartans Free Pick: Over 43.5
Here is my Cowboys Spartans free pick: Over 43.5. Wyoming’s offense has hardly been a scoring machine, and I’m not expecting some miraculous transformation Friday. Fortunately, I don’t need one.
San Jose State has gone Over in five of its last seven games as a favorite. I like the situation, but I’m more interested in what happens if the Spartans build an early lead.
That’s when Wyoming has to abandon its comfort zone. More passing means more possessions, and a mistake can hand San Jose State a short field. Ugly football still puts points on the scoreboard.
I’m betting on the Spartans setting the scoring pace and Wyoming contributing enough to finish the job.
My concern is Wyoming burning the clock without finishing drives. Still, at this number, I don’t need a track meet.
I’ve watched enough college football to know that a couple of short fields can turn an ordinary game into a winning total. Give me Over 43.5.
