UAB is once again looking like one of the best teams in Conference USA.
Western Kentucky uses to be reliable but they have fallen off this season. The defense has evaporated.
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers
Last week the Hilltoppers got whooped at home by Marshall. This week they are at UAB, probably the best team in the league this season. Getting back on track is going to be tough.
This team won nine games a year ago thanks to a salty defense. They are giving up 30ppg this season and definitely do not have the defense to match.
That offense is not even scoring 20ppg. Ty Pigrome, the Maryland transfer, is just not a great thrower. He is the teams leading rusher but that might be more by default than by design.
WKY really struggles to make explosive plays on offense. That means they have to be extra efficient and that is not a strong suit.
This is a very bad spot, one that will test where Tyson Helton is as a coach. They don’t have to win but they do have to compete.
UAB Blazers
The only blemish for UAB this season is a loss to Miami. They were supposed to play last week but their game against Rice was postponed.
Other than Miami they have not played the best of schedules but they are playing the way they want with a balanced offense and a strong defense.
Bryson Lucero has taken over the quarterback job and looked adequate. The key will be maintaining that balanced attack so there is not too much on the first-year starter.
The rest of the schedule is pretty light so don’t be surprised if the team starts to look better and better. They are pretty good but the low level of competition definitely helps them out.
